1st international flight to Sihanoukville Scheduled

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

First, its costs a citizen of Singapore S$100. to gamble in a casino in Singapore. If/when airlines like AirAsia, Tiger, Jetstar, or charters start flying from Singapore to Snooky that S$100. could almost cover a cheap-seat round trip ticket. Get off work Fri afternoon, catch a flight and in less than two hours you are gambling in Cambodia. The next day the Singapore gambler (and maybe his family) lay on the beach. Nighttime its back to the tables and on Sunday a flight back to Singapore. Its a no brainer for the well paid gambler from Singapore for a mini-holiday. Naga World is already buying Airbus jets to fly in Chinese gamblers and PP has no white sand tropical beach's, just muddy rivers, traffic, filth, and no municipal transit system.

Second, Santosa Island may be nice with its overpriced Universal Studio, fish tank, and make believe sand beach's (sand came from Cambodia), but Snooky is the only city in Southeast Asia that gamblers can walk out the backdoor of the casino onto a white sand beach.

Third, Snooky already has Sokha resort/casino with a long white beach all its own and I would say at least a 3 star hotel/complex, and after driving by it yesterday I see that they are building some kind of large additional complex. (bigger casino?)

Fourth, HiSo Thai's will flock to the "new" happening or the latest thing and with one hour flights to Snooky, that could be here.

Fifth, The American Company "Interstate Hotels and Resorts" (owned by the government of China), with another company (also owned by China) signed a deal (One Billion Dollars) to build two 4 star hotels, one 5 star hotel, a 6 star, a casino and condos on Koh Pous Island. This is a signed deal and these companies are worldwide with the money backing of a country (China). To my knowledge this is the first recent big building project in Snooky that isn't some money laundering scam. I don't see how the Cambodian powers that be can screw this one up and it could be THE game changer for Snooky and how well financed tourists see Snooky.

Sixth, Already this year major cruise ships are docking at Snooky. In the past it was also-ran cruise lines with tired old ships, but this year its big newer mega-ships. Someone in those companies is looking to the future.

Posted landing fees for KOS airport:
http://www.kos.aero/en/our-business/air ... ges#anchor

INTERNATIONAL
FROM 1 TON TO 50 TONS = MTOW x US$5.10
FROM 51 TON TO 100 TONS = US$255 + (MTOW – 50) x US$5.70
FROM 101 TONS = US$570 + (MTOW – 100) x US$6.30

(MTOW for a 101 ton plane is $576.30... making it over $1000 just to land. Then leading fees/etc.)

But if you scroll down you'll see some discount programs are being instituted. Though PP charges the same actually.

Slightly off topic but flights may become regular between PP and SV ........ one day.

Here's two choices (ignoring the buses).
From your P.P. hotel to the P.P. airport and arrive an hour before departure..........
An hour or so in the air.........
Land in S.V. and then deal with local Tuk Tuks, Motos and mini vans etc.......

Or grab a taxi door to door for around $50 and around 4 to 5 hours........ for 1- 4 people.

Are there any plans to introduce passenger train service between PP and SHV? Seems like the next logical step.

Yes, it will become a reality as soon as the locals stop stealing the rails for scrap metal every night.

Closer to 30 minutes, I think.

220km @ 400kmh (turboprop) or 600kmh (jet).

But yes, the airport book in/exit will screw it up.

Still way better than 4 hours on a crowded bus, imho.

Now if only they can get those mountains out of the way...

Choice: Set in an aircon airport reading a book/ eating, playing computer, then a 25min flight to Snooky, OR take a 4 to 5 hour bus/taxi ride on the "Death Highway To Hell" with drunk/crazed container/beer truck drivers, ignorant Lexus drivers, cows, motos, and a driver that has a death wish, thinks a horn should be honked every two minutes, and everything on the road has to be passed even on blind corners. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

OR
You have happen to you what happened to me when I booked a taxi at a downtown Snooky travel agent to pick me up when I landed in PP from Singapore. The taxi didn't come into the airport parking lot as he didn't have the money for parking so we had to drag my bags out to the street. The taxi was old, dirty, and had bald tires. The taxi couldn't do over 40km per hour and eventually broke down, but not until after the driver borrowed $50. from me to buy gas from a house out in the country to see if switching from gas to petrol helped (it didn't.) Called the lady that owns the travel agency where I booked, at first she wasn't there (a lie), but after I kept calling she finally answered, but could care less. I caught a ride in another taxi with some young Russian guys who let me share their taxi.(real lucky!) Went to travel agency owned by the women in downtown Snooky and had a heck of the time getting my $50. back that I gave the driver. She kept saying that she sent a "Luxury" taxi to pick me up and I told he she was full of Sh*t. Airplanes from PP to Snooky, bring them on and soon!!

Man you overestimate that "death highway" thing a bit to much. If you take the right company, its not a bad ride anymore. Heard that your also alowed to read a book on the bus. The worst part of the busride is actually getting into the towncenter of PP (or out) from where the airport is at certain times.

While thinking on this subject, in particular the rumors of high landing fees being what deterred airlines when in fact they're the same in all 3 airports, I started considering alternate reasons why airlines would shun the stop... especially since for most its nearly a flyover for an existing route where they'd only need to stop off. One concept I came up with was passenger starvation at the other 2 airports. The very reason Angkor doesn't do a PNH->KOS direct route. If they did then there would be a lot less traffic to KOS from Siem Reap. In fact many people fly into Siem Reap from elsewhere JUST to then fly into Sihanoukville (though obviously some stay a day or two to see the temples since they're already there).

Would making flights regularly into/out of KOS potentially cause the airport (whose code i don't know off the top of my head or I'd be using it) in Siem Reap to potentially shrivel up on traffic? Could it make those routes for the airlines that go there become significantly less profitable, while still being important enough they have to keep them? What about PNH flights? Could that happen with those... after all, how many tourists really WANT to spend time in Phnom Penh? There's not a lot of touristy stuff to do really.

All things to consider really, because major airlines have teams of people who make these sort of "impact analysis" reports and give to the decision makers. It's not unlikely that such a report showed poorly on opening in KOS, and it's also not unlikely that charter planes like that one will show them more of a demand for flights here than they had previously assumed and encourage them to change their minds on the subject.
