1st international flight to Sihanoukville Scheduled

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

And the large party boat they booked for 3 days isn't Korean owned... it's owned by the same guy who had the big boat fire. A westerner.

Its not a matter if , but when the international flights start to Snooky. The Vietnamese strangle hold will eventually be broken. As stated AirAsia was negotiating to fly to Snooky, but walked away as the "fees" were to high. Charter flights full of gamblers will break the deadlock and then you'll have airlines like AirAsia, Tiger, etc ready to bring in gamblers and tourists. It will be interesting to see if the Vietnamese counter by allowing casinos on their tourist island. The next six months will be interesting to see if Interstate Hotels and Resorts (Government of China) start their Koh Pous Island one billion dollar mega project.

One thing that was brought to my attention last night, and a large reason international airline flights may not be making plans for here just yet, the runway length hasn't been published since the extension. The Phnom Penh Post reports that it was extended in 2010, but the ratings in DAFIF still show it as a small runway from 2006: 1296 × 34 m

http://www.gcmap.com/airport/KOS

This is the system international airlines use to plan routes, and would have a MAJOR impact on how many are looking as KOS as a possible stop.

We need a cheap flight direct from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. I have taken a helicopter before but that is quite expensive.

Ideally someone like Air Asia would make a KOS stop from PNH and/or BKK on their way south... and again on their way north. As it's an onward plane in both cases, it should be pretty decent rates.

The powers that be (puppets of the Vietnamese) probably haven't published the runway information on purpose. The flights from Singapore, KL, BKK would be short flights and full of gamblers. AirAsia really tried to fly to Snooky, but as I read in the news said the "fees are to high." How can the fees be so high when there is almost no services, employees, equipment? The answer is that the Vietnamese don't want flights to Snooky interfering with flights to their new international airport just south of Snooky. Drop the corrupt fees, the government signs the paperwork and you have real competition flying into the only city in Southeast Asia that you can walk out the back of a casino onto a white sand beach.

Cambodia Air (owned 49% by Philippine Air) has airplanes on the runways in the Philippines waiting to fly inside and outside of Cambodia, but the powers that be won't sign the paperwork. There would be actual flights from Snooky to PP and return. Cambodia Angkor Air is owned 49% by Vietnam Air and lease their crappy ATR turboprops from them. Cambodia Air would be flying the superior Bombadier Q400 which is much quieter for the passengers and a better airplane than the ATR's. (my opinion)(my brother is a mechanic on the Q400 for an airlines in the US)

You learn to crawl, then you start to walk and before you know it you are running. As well as this charter(and more to come apparently), the coppers down here, at the direction of the new governor, are actually starting to crack down on Khmer Jaows too. Ok, it's far to early to draw conclusions yet, but transitions don't happen overnight and they have to start somewhere, sometime. Just maybe this is the start of something good?!
BTW GM, I drink Angkor, so losing the bet shouldn't break your bank mate!

why would Singaporeans fly to SHV to gamble
the casino on Sentosa is better than any i have seen in Cambodia except for Sohka in PP and although the beach is not out the back door, close enough an the city is CLEAN with no beggars or rip offs.

Gamblers from Bangkok wont fly to shv , thai's think its shit city and hate beaches and they have casinos everywhere near them ( border towns in Laos, Burma an Cambodia)
so that leaves KL only, not sure how many Moslems gamble

2 reason why you will not see international flights; ( contrary to what od says)
there are not enough 4-5 star hotel rooms ( backpackers wont fly when they can take the bus)
landing fees are to high (have heard rumors someone connected to HE has a stake in the airport)

ONLY attraction is for the ones doing the temples an want to add in a beach and don't want to go to one in Thailand or Vietnam.
