Looking to buy Khmer wooden houses

Looking for an apartment to rent in Phnom Penh? We have you covered. This is a good starting point for expats who are in the process of moving to Cambodia to live and work. Finding a villa, condo, flat, or borey to stay in when you arrive is probably one of your top priorities. Check out our listings from the community! And if you have a house or apartment for rent, you're welcome to list it here for free. Kampot, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, and other provinces around Cambodia also have places to rent, but you might have better luck finding them on foot after you arrive, as the largest number of listings are in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Hi people,

I'm looking to buy a few Khmer wooden houses for their timber, if you find any or know any leads or dealers in the vicinities of Phnom Penh, please let me know.

Thanks

If you go out of PP to the villages, you will find a lot more.

I tried to do that in Thailand and Cambodia may be similar because of the controls on teak wood.

Yes indeed you could buy old wooden houses and people do for the teak but make sure all of your paperwork is in order if you want to move the wood around.

In Thailand the forestry department would catalog and register each piece of timber and link it back to an actual originating address. That registration number was written on each piece of timber with a wax crayon.

It was crime to transport it without proper paperwork.

I was told that every teak tree in Thailand was registered and was not allowed to be cut down without a special permit.
As usual there are ways to circumvent these regulations and I know a Forestry official who built a huge wooden teak house.

There was a great mess back then when the government was paying farmers to plant teak trees on their property. At the time there was no prohibition about cutting them down so it was a windfall for farmers. But then a law was passed to prevent the cutting of all teak trees and the farmers were stuck with these trees not earning them any income and the inability to cut them down.

One trick to circumvent the teak ban was to buy an old house with an address and get the locals to bring you a plank at a time which became part of your legal house and could then be re-sold.

May I ask peacock777, is there a reason why you would buy Khmer wooden houses for their timber? Rather then buy from a registered timber yard.
I could understand if it was cheaper to do so, and the wood was faultless, such has no pests or water damage.

Could be to make furniture out of it. Did it in PP, but the wood wasn't teak anyway.
Beware of all nails, screws etc when recycling it....
Some wood dealers are worth a look in Toul Kork.
There's a big stock in Kampong Speu too.

What is your budget? Is it only teak wood you prefer? Could we directly get a quotation for you for teak wood at the quantity you need?

Just to jump in here as I'm also after wood. I haven't a clue what wood the old houses are made from, but there is one near me down in Boeng Tumpun. I need to ask my lady if some of the locals know who owns it. It's been empty and neglected for some time also has a fair bit of land around it. I also want it for a build project and will need to move it, unless the place is for sale, I guess we could make an offer if we could find any owners. This place seems like the family have just passed away or something as it's really overgrown as well. There are a few wood, timber merchants if you search FB. This one is still for sale I think ;
