How to rent a property in Cambodia: a wise man's guide

Looking for an apartment to rent in Phnom Penh? We have you covered. This is a good starting point for expats who are in the process of moving to Cambodia to live and work. Finding a villa, condo, flat, or borey to stay in when you arrive is probably one of your top priorities. Check out our listings from the community! And if you have a house or apartment for rent, you're welcome to list it here for free. Kampot, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, and other provinces around Cambodia also have places to rent, but you might have better luck finding them on foot after you arrive, as the largest number of listings are in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

I've never understood why some landlords calculate water this way. Most single occupants would never get anywhere near $5 worth of water a month, unless they washed their Lexus daily, local style, and had a huge balcony full of plants, and washed their smalls one piece at a time in a washing machine.

Maybe they just can't be arsed installing a meter.
I had a meter at my old place and I'd use right about 4 or 5$ per month... 9-11$ for two of us.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

Arriving in the hot season I ended up having a lot of cool showers to cope with "Oh God, is this hell?" I reckon I got the better end of the water bill by far.

Related, I have spent a lot of time in the tropics, but this is the first country I have experienced where you sweat, in a cold shower, at 2am. That's one more off the bucket list.

With you not showing your face until your wife has double checked everything witht the landlord, when you do finally show up and the landlord meets you, doesn't it make your wife appear a little sneaky?
How do you get that? The point is that the landlord gets what they want ito rent. If they would charge more because I am a barang, who is being sneaky?

Would you support a US /UK landlord who would charge a foreigner more, or a person of colour more?

It should never even enter into the equation.

Yes I hear you, and agree. I presume if the landlord asked your wife where her husband was from, she'd answer honestly. And, subsequently you'd find out if your potential landlord was out to rip off barangs by his reaction. Landlords always ask how many people will be moving in. And it's not uncommon for them to have to declare if they have barangs renting to the sangkat, or fear they might be hassled by the local boys in uniform, so I'd figure it highly likely that the question of your nationality might crop up. But as I said, if answered honestly, it could be a good gauge of your landlord's future attitude towards you when they hear that you are a munt hating, biltong muncher.

Still trying to decipher this... I was munted earlier in the week after too much pharmaceutical, and I do enjoy biltong. I guess this has different meaning in your household though.
