No one ever said real estate in the city was cheap. You can get a new condo (future completion date) for much less, so I'm not sure that the owner did his homework when setting the price.

I was bemused today when I went to Psaar Toul Tom Poung to get some fruit before the market closes for Pchum Benh. Mrs S and I buy from the same sellers week in, week out, and pay Khmer prices (admittedly inflated at that market). I was thinking that sellers would be dumping their product given the week of closure about to happen, but nope, prices were roughly double the normal rates. Apparently the logic is that Pchum Benh. This is slightly more intricate logic than simply Cambodia.

I snuck around to a seller I don't normally buy from as she still tries to charge me stupid barang prices, today she hesitated, apparently confused, and offered me the normal, non-Pchum Benh prices. I picked up some apples and pears, and was happy. I noticed some of those larger sweeter nashi pears hiding under some newspaper and asked how much... she looked at me sadly and replied "t'lai nah." I smiled sadly and said, "t'lai nah" too, and wandered around to admire the bananas at $3 a hand. T'lai nah, bong.

When buying apples, buy one and try it in front of the seller, If its ok then buy more. Apples are mostly kept in cold storage for up to a year, so best to always buy them about 2 to 3 months after the season from where they are grown.
