It's cheaper at Russian Market.

Looking for an apartment to rent in Phnom Penh? We have you covered. This is a good starting point for expats who are in the process of moving to Cambodia to live and work. Finding a villa, condo, flat, or borey to stay in when you arrive is probably one of your top priorities. Check out our listings from the community! And if you have a house or apartment for rent, you're welcome to list it here for free. Kampot, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, and other provinces around Cambodia also have places to rent, but you might have better luck finding them on foot after you arrive, as the largest number of listings are in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Sure, I'll give anyone wanting it the plan for finding a reasonably-priced place and the advice garnered from 13 years experience here for free.

I'll put it on the ghost front page or wherever the owners/mods want to place it. I'm not comfortable with people getting exploited and I'm vocal about that.

It upsets a few smarmy people, usually relatively richer people in professions of dubious reputation and of doubtful character, but as Jesus so wisely said, 'Fuck them'.

I was really feeling your post and agreeing with it 100%, until this last bit where you feel you have to profile people with money and in certain professions.

Anyways, well said for the most part.

Exactly. Your helpfulness and wisdom gets overshadowed by your anger against people you deem as 'rich'.

SP, my anger is not towards the rich. You know that.My anger is towards the rich that got rich in an immoral or unethical way and who exploit people. This is perhaps the twentieth time I have stated this to you and your buddies.

Please write this down, because you seem to have a very hard time remembering it, a lawyer with ADD wouldn't be much use.

Anyway, the offer stands. I just think anybody who pretends that most estate agents are giving them a fair deal is at best stupid, and at worst in with them.

Admin: Please don't let this forum become a slave to some Khmer moron advertising agency that can't even understand what 'cute' means, who post details of multiple apartments that don't even exist, and who ask ridiculous prices for shitholes.

At the end of the day it does not benefit the majority.

If admin can let me know, I can start right away. Perhaps they'd like to check it first, I'm happy with that too.

Real Estate agents provide a service, this service comes with a fee (which in most cases in PP means little to no chance to negotiate down the rental price) - some people are happy to pay for the service and perceive benefit from it. Others that don't see benefit from it are more than welcome to not use their services.

I have used real estate agents twice and twice I have found a place on my own, in all four occasions I was happy with the result.

"Cheaper" does not always equate to better, but each person is different.

I am catering to the market that does not want to pay estate agents.

There are a few reasons for not paying an agent:

1. A person who finds a tenant automatically gets one month's rent in Khmer culture. The agents frequently get more.

2. Agents get commission based on the rental amount.

3. Consumers who cannot understand how this inflates prices don't need an estate agent, they need brain surgery.

4. Consumers who understand, but still use the service, are none of my concern, I just don't understand people giving money away when the
process for residential properties is so simple, but hey, go ahead...

5. Those of you who are interested, and admin, please let me know.

I personally feel it's a very valuable thing to understand, for all of us.

Agree with you there, Vlad. The last thing we want on here at all.

Cool! I think it will be a very helpful guide!

We will definitely get that posted up on here in a good spot! It really will be a helpful article that everyone moving here would want to read. Even people that live here and end up moving around town will benefit from reading.

In the past year and a half (I've moved twice) I took the time to see what an agent could offer, twice.

I felt insulted by their offers. I'm all about a free market, but we should also feel free to try and prevent them from ripping off others, which directly affects us.

Wanted me to pay 6 months up front. Everything was easily $50-100 more than it should have been, and I was looking for places costing no more than $250.

I had to bite my tongue to not practice some of my 4-letter Khmer swear words.

I had much better luck on my own, but I could tell that many had inflated egos about what they thought their places were worth.

So please go ahead and write the article! It will be very helpful for many people, and we really appreciate it, Vlad! Image
