Where to buy rum

Post by daeum_tnaot »

May seem like a silly question, but I’m not in Phnom Penh now and need a relative to buy rum for me. I also read that there may be counterfeit alcohol in Cambodia. Any suggestions on where to get this?

Can you be more specific? What rum are you looking for - is this Malibu for girl's mixers, or a decent Plantation XO Anniversario?

I always picked mine up overseas, but a reliable rum man here said that many decent bottles were to be had at the shop next to Lucky Supermarket on Sothearos. Never been, but I think they stock all sorts of other alcohol, the resident boozers will undoubtedly chip in with the name & confirmation it is still open during this semi-lockdown.

If it's going for a mixer I usually just get one of the local branded ones around $2 a bottle.
A lot of the booze sold here as Whisky is actually rum. Mekong, from Thailand is an example
up to you...

The Mean Sok Heng Wines and Spirits shops formerly located opposite the Cambodiana/Himawari Hotels and the one next to Lucky Supermarket, Sothearos, both closed quite some time ago and are now located at:

Mean Sok Heng (Monument) Shop
#28 Sihanouk Blvd. Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
from Monument to Nagaworld 2 Hotel next door to RSD Tattoo Shop

This shop specializes in fine spirits and has an excellent selection of rums. Last time I was in there I counted 61 different gins and I lost count with the various Whiskeys which must number close to 300 or more. Despite its name this is a specialist spirits shop not a wine shop.

As a Cognac, Armanac, Calvados, Gin and Rum drinker I haunt this shop.

The present location is less convenient for me than their previous two locations.

If you want average rum thats not counterfeit, tell your guy to buy a brand name like Bacardi at Lucky Drink or Navy Drink shop (st 172)and that should be fine. Price should be about $10. If you want "good" rum then check out the suggestions above.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to be making mango dacquiris so not sure if that makes a difference. Probably any normal, reasonable one would be good. Street 172 would be good but it’s about far away. Anything in Tuol Kok? There’s a Lucky, Bayon, and Thai Hunt there.

Thai Huot always has a good selection of the more common/popular spirits although they tend to be more wine oriented than spirits.

Apparently that is because Thais cannot fronounce the "R" in rum so they call it whisky which they can pronounce. Sounds plausible, but no idea if its true
