What do you pay for coffee and where to go?
The cafe that I've been a regular at for more than 5 years decided to put their coffee prices up 27% this week, taking my regular brew from 2.75 to 3.50. Nice low season price gouge.
I won't mention the name of the business lest I be criticised for trying to damage it. The owner does far more damage on his own without trying than I ever could...
I must have been there hundreds of times, often having breakfast or lunch there too, whilst doing my best to ignore the Basil Fawlty like tirades that so often punctuated the time there.
So I'm now trying to find a replacement.
Wondering what places people would recommend that have decent espresso coffees and well priced food?

L'Irresistible Street 454
French press Mondulkiri $1.00.
Personally I might dispute judging a coffee by drinking a cappuccino, but that's my anti coffee-as-dessert bias I guess. This is a good cup despite the use of the apostrophe in the name of the business.

Yes, I love watching long-haired ladies zooming by on their motos.vladimir wrote: Do you like the view of the riverside?
I agree with you, and it is my least preferred brew. If I'm unsure about the coffee in a place I'll most often opt for a cappuccino as is can occasionally compensate a little for a poor blend.JBTrain wrote:

Thank you for your suggestion, I'm not really a fan of plunger coffee, however the one they have at Rising Sun was surprisingly good, at least it was last time I had breakfast there, so I'd be interested to try your suggestion.
Re: What do you pay for coffee and where to go?
I tend to agree with you. Most barista's look down on Capp's, Macc's and - heaven fukn forbid - Frappe's as a wank and a lot of wasted work. If your barista can't make a decent tasting doppio ( most can't btw) then he isn't worth his weight in dogshit frankly. Also, the markup on coffee is HUGE. When you consider the average group basket takes about 9 grams of coffee and you pay , lets say $30 a kilo for a half decent bean ( that's here and obviously you can pay a shitload more if you choose LOL), around 150ml of milk@ about $2 a litre and obviously elec, rent and wages, a capp at $2.50 is bloody good profit, as is a doppio at ,say ,$1.75. Beats a 50cent draught beer hands down (or for that matter, a $2 one too!). These places that charge twice that are simply taking the piss in my opinion. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, pay what you want and charge what the market will pay etc, etc, but coffee snobs are like wine snobs, its not really about the product itself, its about being seen consuming the product that counts!
P.S I'm not complaining, coffee has paid my wages before and is about to again, but just a heads up to you fella's - $3.50 is far to much to pay for the sort of brew you are drinking, unless it has been shat out of the arse of a civet cat and if you are drinking that, then you are a fukn WANKER and deserve to be ripped for as much as possible. Simple as that.

I was offered that in Indonesia on multiple occasions but the said beadie eyed beastie was always in sight, strutting it's cage and daring me to taste the fruit if its ablutory labours. Pass.

Re: What do you pay for coffee and where to go?
Well said hotgidr and I couldn't agree more. Although I am no coffee bean head, I have for a number of years now interrupted my morning’s work by going for a coffee. As much to clear my head as for the coffee itself.
I travel extensively and have the same ritual everywhere I am. However I have noticed that within the western world (America, Europe, Caribbean, Australasia) the price is actually cheaper than in a Cambodian chain coffee shop. I went to costa crap the other day, $4.5 for a large latte which when it arrived it wasn't large and consisted of 90% milk.
Why is Cambodia coffee overpriced and not very good?
Again I am not a coffee head so don’t have a go at me for being a latte lover…..

Re: What do you pay for coffee and where to go?
Good posts, thanks.
I'm no coffee snob either. I need the jolt of a coffee to kick my brain into gear in the morning especially on after the all too frequent broken sleeps that I have. Totally agree with the pricing being over the top. Back home I had a small Krupps machine that would make a kick arse coffee (flat white). I usually used Lavazza Gold. When I buy a coffee I expect that it will at least meet my crappy home standards, but all to frequently they do not, and at $2.50-$3.50 they bloody well ought to!
I miss my machine and looked at buying one here a couple of years ago and only found a few overpriced crappy looking machines at the time so gave up on it.
For me, one of life's simple pleasures is to go somewhere relaxing and have a leisurely coffee and read the paper.
Yeah, I was unimpressed by Costa plenty too. They tried to up-size me and recommended some food for me to try too - FFS!
