Lao is used throughout the country in local coffee though you are more likely to see Vietnamese or Cambodian beans. Not sure how much Illy goes for but i do know that they have patent on a packaging procedure that freezes the ageing of the bean which is irelavent as there blend is horrible IMAO.
The Lao you buy here for $7 is reasonable but it has a few things added to it when roasted locally, caramel colour, vanilla and chicory flavouring and inevitably some fat, oil or butter substitute. I have been into a few local roast houses and they all have their own batch of additives, some places cut the coffee as low as %30.
I like the guy in Russian market for a local ice black. there is a vietnamese lady in ourressey who makes a drip cup that tastes exatly as it would in Saigon. Brown does a decent espresso ( and have just opend a Roastery in town). If im going out for coffee in P.P i ussually choose 'Feel Good', one piccilo followed by how every many espressos i decide to stay for.
At home (kampot) I roast my own beans, the way i like them. I use a blend of Arabica and robusta; Viet, Laotion and Modulkiri. At the moment though i have an assortment of South American and African beans so have been spoiling myself.
I am a true coffee snob.

I'd love to know what exactly a 'piccilo' is. I've searched the net and see many references to 'piccilo coffee' and 'piccilo latte' (by which I think they mean a kind of coffee) but can't quite make sense of what it is.

I think you meant "Piccolo": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortado

Basically, this is just an espresso shot to which a little warm/steamed milk is added.

Piccolo Cafe Latte (Piccolo) (Australian) is a single espresso shot in a machiatto glass, which is then filled with steamed milk in the same way as a caffé latte to give a 3 oz drink, with a 1:2 ratio of coffee to steamed milk, and about 0.5 cm of foam on the top.

Thanks for the clarification.

I did, however, get several google hits for 'piccilo coffee', although it did ask if I meant 'piccolo'.

I am no coffee snob and am bemused by the current terminologies.

I use 3 Corner Kampuchea Double Roast at home, and it's opened my eyes to trying others. Samaky on the corner of 278 and 51 do lavazza for $1.75, which i like before I hit the gym. The Espresso cafe in Kampot is a little bit of Melbourne with good coffee too. I like the 'cafe experience' of taking a book or getting some work done over a couple of coffees at Brown if I feel like splashing out. I know very little about the bean (i'm really a tea drinking Brit!) but this thread is useful!
