Alma cafe has just closed. pretty authentic with a south of the border Mormon home cooked flavor.
they had those christian potluck dinner desserts like red velvet and german chocolate cakes.
they sure had small portions, but well cooked from scratch and will be missed.

1) Hands down winner:

Agave Cocina ... TTP street 426

++++ New, comfortable, upmarket, serves some authentic Mexican dishes, uffers a very wide selection of Reposados and Anejos, very friendly service
---- Pricey, particularly on the drinks side

2) Strong Runner up:

Mexicano ... BKK- Street 288

++++ Chef is from Guadalajara, usual Tex Mex fare but with a fair amount of Mexican street food thrown in. Best Burrito and House Marguerite in town IMHO
---- Small and cramped venue, AL fresco area is mosquito is and lacks fan.

The two above are the only real standouts in PP.

Best of the REST

3) Tacquerina Corona .... 51 street standard Tex Mex Fare from the same guys that run Lone Pine. Nothing exceptional but good quality

4) Alma Cafe .... TTP .... seems more of a brunch place now

5) Dos Besos ... TTP ... This tasted more like New Jersey Tex Mex to me and not close to authentic. Also on the salty side. Margeueritas are dispensed frozen from a 7-11 style machine ... not my idea of a good classic Marguerita. That said portions were generous and food not bad.

6) Cocina Cartel ... behind Royal Palace .... simple big burritos for the most part

7) Viva .... Riverside .... never liked it ... just like same ingredients in different wrappers .... like a choose your pasta choose your sauce restaurant being passed off as Italian.

Departed: Sunrise Tacos, Ofrenda .... I miss Ofrenda which opened just off of Bassac Lane... I think it was open only two month .... too bad, the only place to have Mole Pob lano on offer.

Not tried yet: Tacos Korpelli (The old Alley Cat, also the Burrito stand outside Sundance which a few have recommended to me.

Cheers,

RD
Give that stand outside of Sundance a big pass! She takes about an hour to come up with a burrito and it's the same ingredients as everything else, just in a different wrapper. Boring!!
If you ask or complain about the time it takes to get your food, she throws a hissy fit, and she jacked up the prices for the high season.

Dos Besos, an update;

Cold refried beans, tepid red rice, slightly hot enchilada's with a limited amount of green sauce and sour creme. Cambodia bottle @1.75 per. 8:50usd in total.

You do the math.

I just ate there an hour ago. I had a generously filled burrito which was barely warm with a small side of refried beans- also warm. I had the feeling that my meal had been previously cooked then warmed in a microwave. The meal lacked the quintessential pizzazz of the real thing. Service was like the meal, not bad but could have been warmer.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I'm sorry to hear Alma has closed its doors. That was one of my favorites when I used in Phnom Penh. On the other hand, I'm glad to hear that Sunrise is out. That place had awful, overpriced food and crappy beer. Looking forward to trying out some of the newer places when I visit next month.

I hate Viva! Both PP and SR. No offense to the owner, but I think he's absent often. Place suffers.

The staff plain sucks and are rude. Too many tourists visit there. Treated like trash.

Avoid like the plague! Staff drives off customers, they are busy enough to them!
Melvin Udall: Never, never, interrupt me, okay?

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

Sorry to hear that Alma closed. I was a regular in its early days, but only went a handful of times after it moved. The new place just did not have the same feel. I've always had excellent food at Dos Besos, and I'm surprised to hear that anyone else had a different experience. I know there has been a shakeup in the western management staff, so maybe that had something to do with it. As for Viva (Phnom Penh location only), while the food won't win any awards it has always been consistent the dozens of times I have gone over the years, and the service has always been excellent. The former waiter who I believe is now the manager is probably the best wait person I have encountered in Cambodia. I only go once every couple of months these days, but I have not had any problems. And while their frozen margaritas are certainly not on par with those at Dos Besos, they are a terrific value for $1.50, especially if you like sitting on the riverside. I have fond memories (well, I sort of remember) of lazy Sunday afternoons at their old location with a certain founder of this forum.

As I should have mentioned in this thread already, Alamo Cafe is now open. We serve Tex-Mex and American food, primarily for takeaway and delivery, but you can dine in if you are not looking for atmosphere. We are currently offering free drinks to CEO members. Read more and check out our menu in this thread: getting-your-fill/fre-drinks-from-alamo ... 17874.html
