The Stop - between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville

Post by rozzieoz »

There's a new coffee shop at the rest stop area near Pich Nil, called The Stop.
They have pies, sausage rolls, cookies and lovely looking pastries. They also have beer ;).

The decor is stunning and the toilets are amazing. They have a shaded seated area out the back that looks like what I imagine Bali to be.
Stunning place, highly recommend :)

Yeah, I saw that place a few weeks ago. Nice, but feels and looks a bit out to place to be honest. I had a quick look at their $4 sandwiches, then had some fruit for like 2000r.

Nah, jackfruit... Don't get me wrong, the place looked fine. Engines for tables, fancy decor etc. Just not what after in the countryside. I like it rough there... I was actually my first time ever taking a bus to Sihanoukville. Nice to not have to pay attention to the road, but it also reminded me why I hate taking the bus. That place is so weird with it's Phnom Penh coffee shop vibe in the middle of nowhere, wooden shacks across the street and all. Weird...

Sounds good. My relations have a few plantations in that area I'd like to visit, good to know there's somewhere nearby to get something edible for my fussy western palate. That stop was always famous for bush-meat, I'm glad to hear it's moved on to road-side cafe fare. In about 3 years there should be a vegan cafe.

what is the story with the growing settlement in the valley near there? are those people squatting or have they purchased that land?
2 years ago it was all shacks but i notice now some substantial brick homes are being built.

Almost all of them. I stopped there with Giant Ibis on the way down and again with Sorya on the way back. Weirdly enough, the place in question seemed very empty both times.

Maybe people feel weird drinking $3.5 coffee in those surroundings. I suspect potential customers don't feel like they can enjoy themselves when stopping for just 15 minutes. If driving down on your own, it might be a more attractive option. I noticed they had a nice BBQ out front...

Is the coffee really $3.50 a cup? I wouldn't feel weird, I'd feel ripped off.
