Swill/Brunty's Cider

Post by Sailorman »

Although I have made home brew beer and wine for over 15 years, being from America I was never really exposed to hard cider. I first tried Savanna from South Africa and didn't really care for it. Next I tried Brunntys that is made here in Cambodia and just figured hard cider must be an a acquired taste as I found Brunntys to be absolute swill.

On traveling to Singapore, a Brit friend who lives there took me to a bar that specializes in hard cider with from 10 to 20 different brands. The first one was great and they just got better the more I tasted. We have been back to that bar 3 times/ever time I visit Singapore. The ciders I tasted have got to be the best kept taste treat secret from England ever. Since then I have made a batch of my own black cherry hard cider and have a kit I bought in Australia to make berry cider and will make it very soon.

My question is, how can the makers of Brunntys stay in business? Compared to the other ciders I tasted, its on a par with bilge water. I wouldn't use it to clean my toilet, although maybe that's a good use for it. I guess its just a matter of no real good ciders are imported to Cambodia. Brunntys strawberry had a bad artificial flavor and I would have done better mixing strawberry soda with vodka. The apple is like no apple I've ever tasted and I grew up in Washington state were quality apples are grown. The pear was just undrinkable. Years ago I used to have a giant pear tree in my front yard in America so I know what a fresh pear tastes like and I've made pear wine many times.

Is there anywhere in Snookyville or PP that has the good ciders I tasted in Singapore?

There is a small restaurant on victory hill named "Le cabanon".
It used to be a fish speciality restaurant (speared by the owner) but it was recently sold to a new owner coming from french Brittany and now also serve french creeps and galettes (speared fish still on the menu).
I was there today and we had two bottles of Brittany brut cider (75cl for 12$) that was very good for my taste.

Bretagne is Brittany in english qin...

Anyway I am back at that restaurant for a dessert and they also have a dry SA cider in small bottle:
Savanna dry.
No cheap at 3.5$ per small bottle but very dry and pretty good too.

I'm from the UK and it's really a wino drink... served in a brown paper bag of your choice. I went out last night, the venue was giving cider away for free and the Brits I was with wouldn't touch it at that price.

Thank you Barang, I'll drop by and give it a try. As stated, I didn't like the Savanna, but the Brunntys was absolute swill. Brunntys might be alright after a night of tossing back spirits and you just wanted something wet that would bloat you. Brunntys might taste better coming back up than going down, couldn't be any worse.

(The free cider was probably that swill Brunntys and I wouldn't touch it either.) The Brit Cider I tasted in Singapore was heaven. The black cherry cider I made tasted fantastic and I'm looking forward to making the berry cider from the kit I bought in OZ.

Yea I agree that Bruntys cider is terrible, even though I'm no connoisseur of cider I can tell the difference between quality and shit ciders. Off topic, but I believe Steve Morrish is involved with Bruntys somehow and they are now.exporting it to Australia.

I can't believe the drinkers in OZ would buy that swill. Probably only buy it once.

Speaking of OZ, has anyone been there and tried Stone & Wood Pacific Pale Ale. I rate is as number one or two of the best beers I have every tried or made. I'm glad they don't import it into Cambo as I'd turn into a drunk.
