Suggestions wanted for good value reds to try

Post by Joker Poker »

Back in the land of beetroot and pineapples as burger extras I loved a good red, and particularly liked Clare Valley and Limestone Coast Cab Savs and Shiraz, some from Western Australia were good too, and any of Penfold's mid range or better were great, anything Henshke was lovely.

Over here I have tried a few Chilean reds with mixed results, couple of good Italians, but the French ones I've tried were all pretty ordinary.

So, I was wondering if anyone can recommend anything here that is good value for money in, say, the $5 - $20 range?

I see a lot of international wines around but have no clue as to what is good bang for buck.

Cheers!

Lucky's (?) were advertising Yellow Tail reds at about $8 - this is comparable to Australian prices and we'll worth a look, especially if you're into cab/sav or Shiraz varieties. The promo was for a couple of months from memory, but you'll obviously have to look around for availability.

Some suggestions:

Santa Alicia cabernet sauvignon $4.80 Bayon
Vina Maipo syrah $8.20 Lucky Drink Shop
Casiliero del Diablo pinot noir $11ish now I think LDS
Santa Alicia Milantu 2006 $15 Mean Sok Heng

Monte de Luz tannat from Uruguay was $8.50 The Warehouse but price has jumped ? $12 ?

Chateau Moulin de Bel Air 2011 Médoc $10.20 Thai Huot
Chateau Les Tonnelles 2011 Fronsac $11.60 TH
Chateau Plaizirs 2009 Bourg $8.85 TH

Chapoutier Bila-Haut Roussillon $11 The Warehouse

Given the wines that you prefer, you might find the clarets a bit austere. Depends on what you are eating.

I don't remember the Italian ones, I did keep one bottle for a while as I intended to get some more, but I think the other half chucked it coz it disappeared.

Thanks for the suggestions, that is a great start. Yep, I agree, it depends a lot on what you are eating.

I did try one of the Santa Alicia reds, but it was really cask quality, maybe just a dud year, but didn't try another. Vina Maipo had a red that I thought was good value, and I had many, but then the vintage changed and so did the quality. Not sure what years they were now, but as with most regions, it made a big difference to the taste.

I'll get my self down to TH and make a start.

You might also want to try some reds from that brand new wine producer, South Africa.

I don't often find much variation in vintages with the Chilean jug wines. The SA cs got an honorable mention because at that price point (sub $5) I relax my critical faculties. Their Millantu is an entirely different matter, although bear in mind MSH has poor storage conditions and many older wines there are impaired. They are not alone, worst offenders being Paragon and Pencil where at least half the stock must be undrinkable.

Re. the clarets be aware that the Médoc and the Fronsac are far from being at their peak. Even three more years would greatly improve them, and right now they taste pretty hard and closed next to fruity New World blends. Then again I saw some 2006 Grange today on Monivong, and that would benefit from a few more years too I'd imagine.

Red Apron has some good Italians, The Warehouse too. They have good storage conditions but naturally they charge a premium for this.

Supercheap had some Nederburg Winemaker's Reserve Pinotage last year, don't know if it's finished.

Grace Point cabernet. Widely available in Phnom Penh and a very nice red for the price.
