Sihanoukville Steak land

Post by cptrelentless »

As there seems to be an interest in hearty steaks in Shi...iv, perhaps we can have a new thread on our favourite topic. I have just eaten at Va Restaurant, and although I can't really recommend it as a restaurant he is peddling aged Thai hybrid(? no idea) beef with the guy from Sexy Hexy, which is apparently a cocktail bar on Serendipity. It's been hung for 30 days and is sent over vacuum-packed in a cooler. I got given a sirloin as that's all he had left, but it was a decent bit of meat, he told me his driver had been delivering round town, with Hemmingway's - another Dane, shit service when I was there and overcooked, despite there being a picture book to point at your steak choice - who got a load in. Decent bit of meat, seems reasonably priced, here's his FB:
http://www.facebook.com/VaRestaurant.
He charged me 10.50 for two slightly out of date czech lagers (didn't taste off, made a change from Angkor) and a decent sized sirloin. Maybe 250g.
The other steak in town I think is under-rated is the matured Indian buffalo that you get off of RedRoo and the like, the ribeye I thought was damned good and costs peanuts. I ate them in the Red Hot Chili Shack but my wife won't let me eat there any more as his chef left and his replacement is a freelancer. Not a restaurant freelancer. She's obviously a jack of all trades, hopefully she's washing her hands and stuff.
So we have Missing Monkey for Aussie steak at 15 a pop, mine at 8, and tasty yak for less than a fiver.

I couldn't tell from the photos what cut of meat he was serving but there are surely more options, which is what I was generally aiming at with this thread. What about if you don't want to eat there? CK steakhouse had Australian and American imports but once again you're looking at a high price for what could potentially be equalled elsewhere, his steaks I thought were a little small. I thought the general consensus was that if you want a steak truly to your liking you should cook it yourself, why pay extra unnecessarily?

Warning: This is a shameless plug. :beer3:
Red Hot Chilli Shack is a classic and the new cook is a real sweetheart. O:-) If you haven't been here yet Jamie, you really should - specially since you ain't married so you won't get any aggro about the cook. :D (Just kidding with Cptr. It's totally cool for women also.)
I love the place myself, love the food - good steaks and mexican-style eats - and have had some fun times there, so yeah, I'm totally biased. It's a bit squalid, but it's a "shack", so what you'd expect, not for everyone. (Don't expect Chivas Shack.) However, I'm sure you'd fit in fine Jamie. :thumb: Lol. They have tequila too.

:dm: So for anyone who likes shacks, steaks, Mexican food, cheap draught beer and a cook with a big smile - How to get there: turn down the road that goes off Ekareach by the Orange supermarket toward the sport stadium and its down the end on the right hand side just before the Blind Beggar on the corner. Or turn off Ekareach at Sunday guesthouse and at the intersection it's on your right across the street.

Oh, what a beauty,
I've never seen one as big as that before,
Oh, what a beauty,
Must be 600 grams or even more.
Such a lovely colour,
And nice and round and fat,
I never new they did steaks quite as big as that.
