Mrs Stroppy and I wandered into a beer garden late the other night looking for a feed, a block back from Alma's Cafe.

The sudden silence, the tumbleweed blowing across the street, the batwing doors creaking behind us. We weren't in Kansas any more, Toto.

As we were being carefully ignored I headed for mamasan who was hiding behind her desk, she started shrieking for one of the girls who didn't want to leave her 'new friend'. The closer I got to mamasan the louder and more shrill she shrieked until eventually the beer girl came running to start us and take our order.

She helpfully suggested a couple of dishes without much interest in what we actually wanted, told us she was fat, and headed off to arrange our food. To be fair, she did come back to renegotiate after the kitchen told her 'we' had ordered two dishes of chicken and vegetables that were just worded differently on the menu.

A couple of freelancers wandered in while we waited for our meal and did the classic Western movie double take, but didn't reach for weapons.

The food was okay but the chicken dish had clearly been prepped with a hammer and a machete, we were picking the fine splinters of bone out of every mouthful. Mrs Stroppy was up to the challenge of trying to find meat in the few chunks of bone; as I watched a couple of stump tailed cats working the room I didn't have the heart to tell her that the bones all looked oddly like fine vertebrae.

That dish is a fucking conspiracy against Cambodia. I have banned it in my house by informing the wife the Thais and Viets love it.

I highly doubt you saw freelancers at a beer garden.

You're probably right, although they looked remarkably like working ladies that were not in any way part of the establishment. I am unschooled in these matters and happy to bow to your judgment.
