The girlfriend and I actually wanted to go to the Black Salt but couldn't find it. A Khmer lady that we asked couldn't help but suggested that we go to the Metro Hassakan for a good steak. She said they had great food (mostly right) at very reasonable prices (wrong).

The place looks modern and "hip" from the outside. I did try to get a decent photo of the exterior but some expat (French, obviously) had parked his rust bucket right in front.

Seating is comfortable enough but a large part of the outdoor sitting is not shaded and it gets bloody hot. We watched a group move 3 times in the couple of hours we were there. They should also put some planters or other barriers as people are constantly short-cutting from 148 Street to Sisowat and that is bloody annoying.

It was not all that busy when we arrived and we were quickly presented with our menus. Contrary to what the Khmer lady told us, this place is certainly not cheap, with Martinis around the 6 Dollar mark, draft beer at $3.20, and most mains around USD 20.00. Add 10% VAT and 5% service charge to that and you will be hard-pressed to get away with less than USD 80.00 for two.

The missus ordered the Beef Tenderloin with Asparagus and Hollandaise Sauce (USD 26.20++) whilst I went for the Duck Breast with honey glaze. This was the cheapest main at a measly USD 10.00 and it actually came with sides, unlike the rather expensive steak; this is something the waitress should have pointed out. It was enough food for the girl but I would have been disappointed. I am no big fan of this trend of ordering sides separately as it is often a rip-off. When I pay this sort of money, I don't want to spend another USD 5.00 on my potatoes (food cost about 25 Cents).

The food came fast enough, was nicely presented and came hot though I would prefer that the plates were heated as well. My duck was excellent, especially as I am sure that it was local duck at that price. It was cooked to perfection, pink on the inside, and the honey-balsamic glaze went very well with it. I was not a big fan of the salad. Arugula is too strong a salad to go with a dish like that and took away a little from the rest of the meal.

Image

My girlfriend's steak looked very good but there were a couple of small issues that made this place miss the full marks: the steak was not evenly cut meaning that large parts of a steak that was ordered medium came well done. The meat tenderizer was also overused, giving the meat a mushy texture, something I hate and do not expect in a place like this.

Image

Service was extremely friendly and generally efficient though it took us a good 20 minutes to get the bill. I did like the uniforms though but then I am a dirty old man as I am repeatedly being told by my girlfriend.

Would I go again? Certainly, but I would probably give the steaks a miss. I did check out the restaurant on TripAdvisor and apparently the thing to go for are the "Small plates" (and the poached eggs Benedict) and I certainly will give those a try the next time.

I have been there once, but never return. At that time i was with my friend. She was working there and wanted me to try some foods there. We both have one cocktails each, can't remember what. She ordered a food with salmon fish and i ordered steak and some other stuff, but not much. The bill shocked me, however as she was a staff there, so she got 50 percent discount. It was a huge relieve for me.

The eggs Benedict are wonderful. I go at least once a month for breakfast especially to have them.

Yeah....I wondered, too......quite expensive for a "small plate". How much do they charge for a normal sized dish ??? A small plate of tuna for $ 7.90 ????? :o %)

I like them too but they once gave me the shit...
I like metro but would rather go to the TK Park avenue one. So many better and less costly alternative near the riverside.

I took my parents there because it was easy, but it's over-priced. Food was ok, but nothing to die for... Correct, but not really interesting.
