Metro Hassakan

Discussions about restaurants, cafes, coffee shops or bars in Cambodia. Feel free to write any reviews you have, whether its the best burger you've had in Phnom Penh or the worse pizza in Kampot, we want to read it! Discussions about Khmer dishes are also in here, or you can leave your own. If you own a restaurant, feel free to let the expat community know about it here so that we can come check it out. Found a favorite cafe or have a place we should avoid? Tell us about it. Asian recipes & questions are always welcome.

There are almost no marking obligations or labelling requirements in Asia, and that's where the problem starts. Cheese is no cheese (so called analogous cheese), ham is no ham.......and so on. This what they sell as "ham" in Cambodia is actually pressed meat. Waste meat held together with lots and lots of binder and plenty of chemicals. (meat content is usually not higher than 57 %.....and if it is from Thailand much, much lower I would guess). In Austria (Austria not Australia !!!) it is prohibited to sell such a product as ham. It is sold under "fry-like foamy , starchy mass with muscle fibers, grown skeletal muscle , connective tissue , spice particles , and poultry skin"
Anyway......don't buy that shit in Cambodia.....it tastes nasty and is extremely unhealthy.

P.S.: have you ever seen these packages of "cheese" in Cambodian supermarkets ? That's the stuff that lands on your pizza.......it's not cheese, it's analogous cheese (modified oil)

but it comes in many different forms and packages. So that cheddar cheese you buy all the time in Cambodia is no cheese. It's cheapest shit sold for a just crazy price.

You're paying 22 cents per egg? Must be organic...

Yupp, organic, free-range. Taste very good and well worth the mark-up.

Well, after all that, looks like Black Salt are cactus. After my last post I remembered that they did have a permanent sign as well as the sandwich board. Seems to be gone.

I barely ever buy cheese so I'm far from being any sort of expert on it. However Cambodia Superstore on 1986 sells Irish cheddar and I'm pretty sure most of the cheeses you buy here are from Australia, New Zealand and France and aren't some sort of fake stuff.

There are others imported from Malaysia and Singapore too. Here in Siem Reap we have a cheese-maker who makes a fantastic cheddar too.

We buy 2kg Bega brand blocks of chedar from Australia at $23 for cooking/sandwiches. Seems to be the same as the product sold in Oz for twice that much.
