5 Men Brewpub SHV
Re: 5 Men Brewpub SHV
I've had that happen with "award-winning" commercial craft beer here in Australia. Hope that's the case, and they're actually good. Wife and I will try these guys in a couple of weeks, I reckon.wackyjacky wrote:I'll give 'em another shot based on your say so, but the shit we got the other night was just wrong. They probably skipped aging/conditioning altogether to meet demand. Maybe somebody fucked up and fermentation stopped.

yeah, i'm wondering... you you like ANY unfiltered beers? it sounds like that's what they're brewing, and could be why you don't care for them if you're not an unfiltered sort of guy(gal?).

I know beer. I've made beer. I was in the bar biz all my life. I've tasted 1000s of different ones. It takes up way too much of my brain. I don't mind unfiltered. I like Hefe's unfiltered. I even like hand pumped cask beers. This was unfinished uncarbonated beer & it tasted like shit. It tasted like beer I made that we tested and drank before it was ready. If they had laid it down for a month or 2, it would've been OK - probably. I'll give 'em another shot. Sailorman swears by 'em and he seems to know his beer.

I know a load of people down there who think their beer is fantastic... including a few Germans (who tend to know a thing or two about beer).

I'll give 'em another shot. I'm thinking more and more they fucked up one batch (no 2 the stout sucked as well) and I was unlucky enough to drink it.

Sounds like you like your beer. That's cool. I would love a nice ale.Sailorman wrote:I have been homebrewing beer and making wine for over 15 years. I travel to Singapore to Ibrew to get my equipment, ingredients, and on my fourth batch (America Style Cream Ale) and currently have a batch of Cherry cider brewing.
I find their beer very good and quite drinkable (and very cheap.) The lite has a nice hoppy start with a crisp finish. The dark has a very nice malty flavor and is my favorite. I can't pass by the place without stopping. They both come out with nice heads and in a icy mug.
I guess when one is used to drinking the swill-from-the hill in Sihanoukville at $.50 a mug or the rest of the Cambo beer, when you find good beer it tastes "funny." If I have to drink Cambodian beer I drink Cambodia Beer. At home I'm currently drinking a batch of American Style Cream Ale and it goes down so good. I don't usually do Lager as I like Ales, but yesterday I received the ingredients for Australian Lager. Now I have to buy an extra refrigerator as lager has to be brewed at around 65F.
"Happy Beer?" Easy to make, but I try to stay away from the illegal side of things. BTW/ I lived in Alaska for 20 years. Alaskan beer that is brewed in Juneau, Alaska is great. They make a Smoked Porter once a year that's to die for. I really miss Grant's Scottish Ale that was made by Bud Grant in Yakama, Washington, as Bud died. RIP Bud, a true brewmaster's brewmaster.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

Re: 5 Men Brewpub SHV
All the beer I brew is unfiltered and thus has active yeast. I must say that while I really like the "black" beer at 5 Men, the "light" beer seems to be made for Cambodian tastes (99% of his customers seem to be Cambo.) He is doing one thing right for sure. He is educating Cambodians what a good beer should taste like. I wish his service during the daytime was a little better. I live near and when I drive by during the day I usually stop in for one, but its hard to get waited on.
The swill-on-the-hill made in Sihanoukville I don't even consider beer. Its said that their quality control is almost non-existent and it shows. I just bottled my first batch of Black Cherry Hard Cider and am counting the days (5 more) until its ready, until then I'm having to drink American Style Cream Ale. If you drink the swill-on-the-hill from Sihanoukville on a day to day basis (its cheap) than a heavier beer or a beer with more flavor or robust flavor will probably taste off.

You're right SM, but I like Angkor Porter. In fact I like just about all the black beers in CMB, ABC especially. I wish I could find Kingdom Pilsner in the bottle down here - it's half decent. It used to be around, then it disappeared about a year ago. My bet is that it has something to do with "the swill on the hill' as you call it.
