This is yet another restaurant I have wanted to visit for a long time but the fact that it is only open in the evening somehow always got in the way as did the fact that I did not know where it was. Once I figured out that it wasn’t far from Highschool Road, and once I blocked an evening, off we went (actually the same day we went to L’Annexe so this restaurant was going to face some stiff competition).

Prices are very reasonable.

The restaurant is fairly small and does not seem to have much room inside. As it was a beautiful evening, we met our friends outside in a pleasant garden and quickly got two glasses of George’s homemade infused rum. Not my thing but they do have cold beer and my girlfriend liked the two rums.

Image

Not a very big menu but certainly interesting.

The menu is quite varied with no real national theme and everything from Asian to Creole was present. Prices are very reasonable with the rum shots going for a Dollar each and beers ranging from USD 1.50 to USD 2.00. Not much choice in either beers or wines but then this restaurant does certainly not market itself as a fine-dining establishment. Starters are from USD 3.00 onwards whilst mains can be had from USD 6.00 to 10.00, with the recommended specials being at the upper end of that spectrum.

We all went for the specials.

As we couldn’t decide what to have as a starter, we took the “Creole” plate; a mix of Samosas, Bouchon, and Badia. All very fried but not oily, tasty and really nice with a cold beer or five. We chatted with George and his wife a little; they had just come back from La Reunion and had brought back not just cooking utensils but also new recipes. They are both very charming and certainly play a large part in the restaurant being so popular.

The starter plate.

We decided to all take the specials which were a selection of casseroles and Creole dishes. My “Boucané Chasseur” was a mix of homemade smoked pork with olives and was excellent and surely different from anything else I had tried in Temple Town. The missus had “Gratin Boucané”. This also came with smoked pork, but also with gratinated cheese and pasta. A little too heavy for my liking but, again, there was nothing wrong with the taste. Boucané is really just a wooden smoking hut and plays an integral part in Reunion food.

Great home-made chutneys and Sambals.

It is difficult to describe the taste but it is a sort of East-meets-West with the accompaniments more Subcontinent whilst the olives added that Mediterranean touch. The dishes itself were not spicy but a couple of the home-made chutneys and chilies were. They were actually really good and George gave my girlfriend a glass of his chili paste when he heard it was her birthday and it is darn good. Whilst I did not try it, our friends, who took the Poulet Coco, also proclaimed the mixture of spices well balanced, without any single ingredient overpowering everything else. All the meats were very tender and there is some seriously good cook in the kitchen.

I do not think there are any desserts on offer but we were completely full so that was not an issue. The restaurant is quite different from the “L’Annexe” but that does not make it worse. If you are looking for a relaxed place with unusual food at very reasonable prices, genial hosts, great service, a pet and kid-friendly place well away from the circus that is the center of town, then I can certainly recommend Georges Rhumerie.

An Old Reunion in Siem Reap
Image
At present the rhumerie produces 10 varieties of 18-19 proof infused rum with the punch-like coconut concoction being the most popular.
Other varieties include mango, pineapple, tamarind, ginger and kaffir lime.

Working on the theory that food goes better with rum, or vice versa, the restaurant serves a French creole fare that’s unique to Siem Reap with prices ranging from $3 to $10.

Main dishes include exotica such as stewed pork trotter cooked in red wine and homemade smoked bacon and olive with a tomato white wine sauce.

An interesting range of four different sausage dishes also features, including pork blood sausage, and for vegetarians there is sausage made from only beans.

And of course diners can arrange for a special tasting of some, or for the brave hearted, all of the infused rums, to make the evening a little different.

Update: They are now distilling their own craft rum from local sugarcane.

I just saw that. Need to look for alternatives.
