I'm a a bit of a heathen in that I have come to quite enjoy Nescafe three-in-ones. I have a large 400mL mug that I add two sachets to, and I'm good to go for a while. I taught myself to like them as I can't justify the $5 coffees that other expat do-gooders seem to sprout at every moment.
you know SC thats a weird statement from you. WHat do-gooders are you talking about? the christians who have flooded TTP or is this another outdated stab at NGO professionals? I don;t know anywhere that sells $5 coffees, the most expensive in town are at Starbucks which is flooded with Khmers.

In addition whilst I'm yanking your crank, for someone who makes ethical products and plays on the environment, how do you justify the senseless waste of plastic those sachets of "coffee" produce? :stir:

Nescafe 3 in 1 ingredients list, sounds yummy

Sugar (51%), Whitener (37%) [Glucose Syrup, Coconut Oil, Skimmed Milk Powder (6%), Natural Flavouring, Anti-Caking Agent (E551), Milk Protein, Acidity Regulator (E340), Stabilisers (E331, E452), Emulsifiers (E471, E472e), Colour (E101)], Instant Coffee (8%), Caramelized Sugar, Salt.

That equals 17g of sugar for your two sachets. Or 4 teaspoons + the glucose, caramelised sugar & Es

Most of the coffee around town is between $1.80 & $3. Starbucks & Joma are a little more, and also pretty shit. You can pick up a decent coffee at a locally owned, non-chain Khmer cafe for around $1.50. which also helps out the local economy a little

I reckon that you could get close to $5 with a supersize coffee with an extra shot of coffee, hazelnut/caramel syrup and cream. Sounds revolting, but some go for it.
Although the PiPay/smartVIP discount takes us away from the target...

I suspect SC was playing on hyperbole a little.

I keep looking for 2 in 1 sachets but only occasionally have I seen them. The sweetness of 3 in 1 sickens me.

I was generalising about generic do-gooders. I don't feel a need to justify the plastic sachets that three-in-one comes in, however we do our bit by using biodegradable shrink wrap and paper product packaging in the enterprise.

Yep, it's not hard to push a coffee up to $5 once you start snowflake additions and subtractions.

I suspect you're right!

Yeah, they are sickly, which is why I add about twice the water. I used to have a caffeine addiction when I was a lecture-theatre lecturer, so drinking well watered coffee kinda fools me into believing I'm getting the hit, without actually getting the hit. The two-in-ones are a rare beast indeed, last bag of them I bought was in Lucky's at Sovanna.

Thanks, we already help out the local economy a little. Always happy to be schooled in how to do it, though.

I'm not sure how you'll feel about this, but quite a few of the Christian NGO coffee shops carry a good range of teapot teas, and serve it hot, with a teacup. The ubiquitous Jars of Clay, and Open Arms, among them.

Pretty sure a kilo of freshly ground local or lao arabica is a better option, stroppy? Can't be much more expensive, and tastes a hundred times better.

At least you're not drinking that Old Gold 3 in 1 which is made of roughly 37% of orang-utan tears.

I had the opportunity to drink free daily kopi luwak in Indonesia as the place I was staying at kept civets for just that purpose, but I just couldn't bring myself to drink the stuff while the beady-eyed little bastards were staring at me, possibly thinking "I know where that's been..."

Also while in Indonesia Mrs S and I went to a meal-and-night-tour at a private zoo and got on very well with the staff, unlike a family of foreigners who were also there. As we did the tour, the staff silently took our hands and held us back a couple of times - the first time a gibbon had his junk out through the bars up high, and was waiting to pee on the visitors, the second time was rounding a corner to see a very large orang sitting on his island waiting to fling poo, and it turned out he was an excellent shot. I don't think the staff liked that family of foreigners much!

Yeah, understood. Even I get scowled at when I enter certain premises, and they know me and what I do.
