Didn't The Garage Have Good Burger ?

Post by wackyjacky »

I had to catch the Giant Ibis to Snook yesterday and I was headed to Larry's for a burger. I noticed that the Garage was open kinda. The door was closed but the sign said open. I was surpised. I recalled a couple drunken evenings where I was quite happy with their hamburgers. So I ordered the bacon - blue @ 6.75. They had to defrost the packet of meat. I still had 30 mins so I was still somewhat confident. What I got was a patty about the size of a US half dollar, but not as thick. 1 strip of bacon and no lettuce, onion, tomato, fries, or blue cheese. It was cooked -barely. I asked for MR and it was tartare. That was probably my fault as I said that I was in a hurry. My question is, didn't their burger used to rock or was I just hammered ? BTW, Anchor drafts at $1.25 during the day is kinda non-competative eh ?

I always liked their "smashburger." I only tried the regular burger once, I didn't care for it, they were doing them "sous vide" and the burger was like pink, boiled mush.

I hardly ever go in there since the prior owners sold it.

One of the main reasons for using 'sous vide' is meat shrinkage. It must've started out as 1/20/kl.

Yeah I tried to normal (sous-vide) burger maybe twice because of all the raving on K440, but just couldn't bring myself to like it at all. Tasted like meatloaf, or some weird sponge. Texture wasn't nice and the taste was so-so. Only decent part was the caramelized onions. Never tried their smashburger, but as MC points out, it seemed to be popular with those who prefer a more traditional burger.

I will be stopping by in a few weeks. Is the owner usually in these days?

I think not usually. He has a barang manager now. The sous vide burger usually goes wrong when it's improperly sealed and water gets in the bag, that explains mushiness. It happened sometimes on my watch to my frustration. It's a pretty simple thing to prevent. The burger is never boiled as the water is 134F. People who don't like pink meat shouldn't order one, order the Smash which nobody ever complains about.

I love them. I think I've only had them at Garage.

I like rare/medium-rare, so maybe that has something to do with it.

It's a shame what has happened with the burger there. Used to be the best in the city, although it was never very consistent. Last time I went, they didn't cook the burger sous vide, just saw em shape the patty and chuck it straight on the grill resulting in a very dry burger.

Meh, I was never impressed with the food, either Garage v1 or 2.

The food at Larry's...now that is something!

Bring lots of boodle, though.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)
