Whatever you do, don't go to Laos.

I suggest, somebody start a new thread, listing the names Cambodian restaurants which always have fresh food, and use proper hygiene. Next time I am in the area I can check them out. Include information as to whether they are run by foreigners or Cambodians. They can be anywhere in Cambodia.

With all due respect your posts come across as extremely tedious and at times condescending but as troll type posts they are very effective. Even my cat agrees!

However: There are a few threads already, and there have always been a few excellent restaurants in Phnom Penh even twenty odd years ago when I arrived there was l'Atmosphere followed by Le Petit Bordeaux, Open Wine and La Petite France. Now there are literally "wall to wall" restaurants in Phnom Penh with cuisine of all nationalities, just do a google to find them.

Here's Doc67's review of La Ferme de Bassac for example getting-your-fill/ferme-bassac-review-t ... ml#p353604 I think my reviews are on TOF and you could also check some of Migs reviews there.

Cambodian cuisine has quite a few nice dishes, and my wife makes a few.

The problem is not so much the cuisine, but finding the right ingredients in the boonies. Beef everywhere, but it's either extremely chewy or fatty. The same for pork.

But a Khmer lok lak made of proper bush meat..... Not much beating that one.

The rice is fine. We eat the export stuff from Battambong and it us the equal of Thai rice. The missus cooks some pretty good dishes but I think they are more Thai than Khmer . And unlike Khmer food it is very hot. We eat lots of chicken feet, pigs feet, fish and crab. They do miss the rats though.

BUT what you get in restaurants is largely, you eat cause you have to eat and the gf/wife doesn't have access to a kitchen. Even Burmese food is better....
Best flip food i had was in HK>
Yeah the home stuff is the best. A wife/GF who can't cook is like a suit with no pockets.

Explorer- as JB said, this thread was and always was only about khmer cuisine vis a vie other asian cuisines. It wasn't about food hygiene until you brought it up... That's a side issue that is derailing this thread..

Given you brought that up, how about you start up the new thread that you suggest about khmer restaurant hygiene and which ones have fresh food or not?

In answer to the question, I'd say the most under rated is Philippines, because it seems to have a reputation for being appalling, and is generally perfectly acceptable I found.

In terms of the best options Singapore has to win hands down, but Cambodia would certainly be up near the top of the list I'd say, particularly if price was taken into account.

The trouble I find in Phnom Penh, is how quickly many great little places close down. Every time I went it would seem like my favourite restaurants from the previous trip were no longer around.
