Worst meal we had in Kampot.
What's going on at Riki? It used to be fantastic, I was a great fan of the beef saraman followed by apple pie.

That's a shame. I have eaten there a couple of times and the food was great.

Name: Atelier Kampot
Address: 15 Riverside Road
Telephone: 010 44 60 44
Opening hours: 12-10
Cuisine: Asian Fusion

Rating: 3.5/5

OK, felt like a steak today so went to Atelier at the riverside. Don't think I've ever taken pictures of my food before in a restaurant but for the purpose of this review I overcame my embarrassment, here they are:
ImageImageImageImage
Before you question why the pictures don't match, I moved inside for dessert since it was getting too hot outside.
Let's start with the last picture. The prices in their restaurant are completely different to the prices on their website. Steak was $8.5 instead of 7. They also don't serve cocktails anymore so don't let their website pictures of Hendricks Gin mislead you. They only serve soft drinks and wine..

On to the food..
The shrimp tasted amazing and very fresh, a little bit spicy but not overpowering, but damn they were small. Took me less then a minute to eat the whole plate.
Steak: asked medium rare and was cooked to perfection. The sweet potatoes and vegetables again all very nice and fresh. Pepper sauce I already forgot about, mediocre at best. That's all the good things I can say about it. The steak was probably the toughest piece of meat I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of Khmer beef. While my starter was finished before I could blink, my steak probably took me 3 minutes of chewing before it was deconstructed enough to swallow. I might have been unlucky and it isn't always like this. I did eat it all but that's mainly because I was hungry and the taste wasn't bad either.
Dessert was supposed to be pancakes with vanilla ice but instead they put coconut ice cream on top without telling me. Didn't mind as both were satisfactory but not memorable.
Wine was a decent sauvignon blanc, again nothing to complain about.

All in all, I think if they would make some adjustments in the future I would return. But would prefer they switched to better beef and maybe adjusted their prices a bit. $4.50 for the tiny prawn skewers I thought was a rip-off even though I loved them and was actually thinking of ordering a second plate. But they were really much smaller then they look on the pictures!

Oh and why do so many restaurants have uncomfortable chairs these days, really annoys me, would've stayed longer for a coffee if they had some comfy chairs.

This is the first time I wrote a restaurant review so if I left something out, feel free to ask.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the food at Bokor mountain lodge, if you haven’t eaten there before give it a try, open all day.

There are so many places in Kampot now, I wonder how any of them make a living, let alone a profit!
Sorry but that is the most inept run eating places on the planet.

Always advertise interesting specials on the board but dont have any - three times I tried

Last time 4 of us went and after one of us had eaten some garlic bread and 40 mins after placing our orders we got told that a dish with chorizo in it was now not available cos they had no chorizo and pepperoni didnt work apparently. Then there was no beef / pork or chicken left because the meat hadnt come from PP. The 2 girls ordered the crab and were then told there was only one dish left but they could share it and buy some extra rice.

Never again .... too many better choices that I will list later

Havent been here long but have been eating out a bit so here goes:

Cafe Espresso - excellent brekky / brunch / lunch. Had chorizo burger and usually the hens eggs with bacon, tomato jam and sourdough bread. Fabulous coffee that I buy for home. daylight only.

Tertullia:- Bugger me this place is bizarre. They do excellent lunch specials like seabass for under $5 and when they are on song the food is really really good - esp the seafood. Some examples:

But then they defy all logic and become ridiculously pretentious. Example one: Roast beef ordered but it came served cold and near raw. Asked the waiter if the chef ( standing in the door smoking and playing on his phone ) if it could be quickly flip flopped in a pan and the chefs answer was 'No - it is cooked that way'

See for yourself

My friend wrote a bad review on FB that started a flurry of back and forth comment from the owner who claimed it stated MediumRare on the menu. When I pointed out that they could hardly afford to be up themselves when we were the only customers they had all night and they had a lot of competition they did back down a bit - the menu never said MR either

Image

I dont bear a grudge and went back a time or three again with other friends and mostly no issues.

Then I took 5 others there and we ordered a lot of different dishes - some of which required their usual offered bread but when we asked for it to put the sardine pate on we were told there was no bread. We suggested they whip round to the several bakeries nearby and grab some but were told no. A fellow diner said fook that and went and bought some that we used instead. Five staff and only us eating.

Probably the final straw was when 2 of us went last weekend and while it was busy most tables were finishing up so we sat on the bench outside. After waiting nearly 10 mins I asked for a menu and was told they dont serve food there at the bench table. I said let me order and when one of those other tables left I would move to eat and was in no hurry. The waitress just said no she couldnt so I left.

It has potential but the owners/chef are so far up their own khybers that it will probably fail soon

Razorback BBQ

Across from town on the old bridge - nice spot but a fairly limited menu and all meats etc are smoked. Good place to hang and excellent bloody marys with clamato juice

Gym Club

Next to the gym on other side of the river between new bridge and railway tracks. Evenings only but nice cheap expat bar and excellent Khmer food

Not sure about Best but...
Try Aroma. Its in the street that is almost opposite Paris 2 GH. (same road as Doghouse bar) Few doors down on right. Nice Wraps,. freshly made. Had the Chicken with Falafel, pickle & Hummus . A meal in 1. Nice Italian coffee. Very reasonable price and good service.

i endorse both razorback and aroma
paris gh2 has amazing pumpkin bread- like real bread- not some teacake muck. outstanding bread and worth the breakfast for the toast alone.

Those pictures from tortullia look really tasty. In some countries they do indeed serve the roast beef like that, my birth country is one of them. But the owner sounds like an *sshole from your review so I won't be adding it to my to-do list.

I love the food at Aroma. I often get a delivery to my guest house.
Good pizza to be had at Mea Culpa, although no atmosphere, so better to take away.
Razorback is great. That Dean is a great host.
I've had a good chicken with blue cheese baguette and potato wedges at Pepe the Viking, although you do have to rub shoulders with soap dodgers.
Sausage and egg muffin at Mary's on the opposite corner to Crusty Peehole.

And Espresso always comes up with the goods. Never fails.
