Your Supermarket Experience

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. mine's not too bad. i went to lucky's alot. most of them, the one at TK, the mall, and sovanna (had apartment near there for 2 months). been to bayon.
sometimes they stare, but they don't follow me aisle to aisle.
i also use to go to this small mom & pop near the riverside, the first couple of times they followed (they only had 2 aisles), but they saw me so often, they stopped caring.
i guess i don't have that shoplifter's face.
i've never had issues with cashier ringing me up, but i don't buy large amounts. 2 bags of stuff at most.

What IS with the following? Suspicion? Curiosity? Misconceptions about western expectations?

Feel free to tell your experiences here and tell the name of the supermarket.......perhaps things are getting better then.....you never know.
Don't get followed around, but everything else you mentioned, all the time at Samadura in Snook, Perhaps 30% of stuff has no prices rather than wrong prices. Most everything frozen has been refrozen. Fruit & veg get stocked and restocked very slowly if at all. They just went at least a week with no apples for some reason. Often no fruit or veg I want to buy & I'm off to Psar Leu. A few times I bought a big hunk of their 'cheddar like product' & no plastic has been wrapped around it. I't's the best in town by a longshot too. I was in Bayon in PP a couple days back and I felt like I had taken a big step up into the 2nd world. Mind you I know it still sucks, but what a difference. Seemed like they had more staff than customers. Shoplifting would be difficult I'm sure.

+1 about the price tags. However the staff is friendly and willing to help once you ask them.

Cheese in Samudera is about a third of half less than in PP. Their Italian bread is pretty good. Friend of mine worked his way tirelessly through the liquor section. He compared all prices and registered them in his phone. No problems. In the end he walked out with 8 liters which went into his checked luggage. This left him with some allowance for the carry-on. The 12 liters will help for a month or two in those dry Muslim places.... ;)

Maybe supermarket staff gets pissed when people start taking notes who are not known to be regular customers. I think once they know your face and can interact with you possible concern will be easily overcome.

Too bad that Samudera does not fully use its potential.

Many, many, MANY moons ago, my ex wife was a "comp" girl in K-mart at Toombul in Brisbane. Her job was to COMPare prices with the COMPetition. Geez she copped some grief. Why do you guys think that its a problem if these places are keeping an eye on you to make sure you aren't a competitor trying to undercut their business?

Well. I used to work in a supermarket for 5 years of my life. I know the Ins and Outs of the business.

Ever wonder why at Lucky's the beef always looks a little dark or off? Turns out that they turn the power off to the whole building at night. You can also examine their ice cream. Nice and icy on top. its from them turning the power off.

I also question how much filler is in that chop meat! wayyy to pink to me.

Eat safe guys!

Don't buy the meat loaf at Chao San Hok Superstore in Siem Reap.........you bite in.....and you drop dead.
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist
