If you were an expat moving to Cambodia, where would you move to and why?

Really interesting to see Siem Reap polling so poorly.
Is the huge road infrastructure projects the main reason?
Or are there other negatives to SR?
I assumed being close to Angkor and the temples would be a positive?

I guess that should read 'flew out'.truffledog wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:39 pm As a retiree traveller with wife I second Kratie as it is small, cheap to stay and still has a little of that original cambo vibe. The surrounding area is stunning if you love nature and relax contary to bars and having fun.
Choice of western food and/or good restaurants is limited but as we love to cook as much as possible, ingredients for lovely home cooked food are all there. 5-10 liter of good olive oil will make my stay even more comfortable on a long stay.
From time to time we fly out for a thai/filippino beach holiday (to some remote island) to have our share of beach time. Evey couple of weeks a visit to PP or BKK (better) to have some city life. Cambodia beaches have mostly lost their appeal beeing overpriced or horribly developped...or with no service at all (im out of Robinson Crusoe lifestyle).

I live in Ratanakiri, about 5 km's outside of the main center, on the edge of my village. My house has the best view, overlooking kilometers and kilometers of hilly countryside, I could ever afford.
Is it perfect? Far from, but it's pretty good. Life is cheap, life is slow, 4g is available, and power is much more reliable than before. The water from my well is clean, the eggs of my chicken taste great and I pick great avocados every day. Not even talikng about the delicious mangoes or dragon fruits from the garden. Ratanakiri is far from Phnom Penh, connections are scarce these days, but Covid has changed everything, everywhere. If you're healthy it's a great place to ride out this pandemic. Far enough from Phnom Penh to ignore the silly rules issued there, still relatively cheap, an international supermarket in town (comes at a price though) - but only if you can deal with the remoteness.

Surprised Sihanoukville has so many votes.
People of the world, spice up your life.

Thailand.
You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body.

TTP is affordable, it's full of cozy little eateries, and being white is nothing out of the ordinary. It's as clean as your typical Paris neighborhood.

Love Kratie as well. Still have old Cambodia vibes but you can get a nice meal as well. Not too many expats last time I was there. Only concern would be medical care.

Siem Reap was always a one trick pony that relied completely on tourism. Tourism has disappeared and there is nothing to fall back on. The road works aren't the problem, the fact that there are no tourists is. I haven't been to Sihanoukville since a year ago but what I saw was not pretty and I don't ever want to go there again. Say what you like about the capital but it has diversified industries and the collapse of tourism has only affected a small part of the economy.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

My previous post was more to do with the OP's questions of a expat moving now to Cambodia.
I have to admit the few years I have lived here I have not found my ideal place, I am so doubtful now that I would ever find that place anywhere in the country. But even so, who really knows what is around the next corner on another new day.
Would I do anything differently? Probably, for now I think I have too many household items to make an easy move to a different Provence. Last move I hired a minibus to take my belongings from Koh Kong to the Phnom Penh suburbs, now I have more things to consider with a move.
If I was to think of a move now, I think out of town Siam Reap would be high on my list. But once the tourist trade picked up I would be looking to move again.

Always "hope" but never "expect".
