You longtimers are right...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

You longtimers are right...

Post by Bhodi »

It takes a lot more than just desire to retire in Southeast Asia than to actually get it done I'm here now and I'm still thinking about whether not I should do it. I know one thing for sure I don't want to live in Phnom Pehn I want someplace quieter cleaner.
If I had my choice I love to retire in Thailand perhaps but the Thailand government is fucked and I'm not allowed to have my medicinal cannabis And extremely strong narcotic for a broken neck where's the fun in retiring in a semi paradise if I'm always going to be in excruciating pain because I don't have my proper medicine.

Yeah you're right but at least you can get it here and people for the most part won't get all bent out of shape when I light up. For those who think Cannabis is no more than a potheads excuse I'm here to tell you it's genuine serious medicine and it helps reduce the amount of oxycodone I require for the day. I'm kinda bummed out now because it's starting to look like I'll have to stay in Canada just so I won't have to live in agony...the upside I keep telling myself is that I can still walk.

True;

I passed thru SE Asia first time back in 1975, than made an extended bicycle trip thru here in 1982 and in '83 moved here.

You are 100% right, you need more than desire, u need a game plan , a marketable skill or some $$ to invest ( and if u do choose that route, sit back for 6 months and watch/learn)

I am sure IF u truly need ganga (or something that will ease the pain) u can get it thru a dr here.
Every time i have had to go to the hospital here ( only went if i was in Pain) , 1st thing I told them was i needed morphine, everytime had my injection within 5 minutes. One time i had a blood clot an was in pain, they gave me a morphine drip that i controlled.

I traveled to Thailand since 1980 and just about every year since.(sometimes staying for 5 months at a time.) Thailand doesn't want long stay retirees, just people to come in spend their money and leave in two weeks. I was going to retire on the far side of Ko Samui, but found Sihanoukville.

I lot of people down Sihanoukville, but usually its people that only go to the tourist/girly bar areas. I find it wonderful and paradise. Come down and find Hawaii beach. Look across the street from Hawaii beach at the compound there and tell me its unlike anything you have seen in Cambo. I squint my eyes and its a suburban street in America/England with mango trees as big as oaks. The landlord has built more two bedroom houses behind our compound. We are 3 min walk from the beach, 10 min from Independence beach. There are 10 beach's in Snookyville. I know one beach at the edge of town no one goes too.

I spend $290 for a one year visa and have it in 3 days. I spend 45 dollars for a drivers license and have it in about two weeks. We have one grocery store that has about everything you need and two others with some things. I use a pharmacy that gets the old age drugs I need. We now have a KFC, but there already is better fried chicken here. Any tuk-tuk driver will get you the smoke you need. Lots of restaurants. You want to get away, there are islands just off shore.

your wrong,
Thailand wants anyone that has money, ($$$$$)) retirees, married to thai's, working etc
just as long as they have the correct visa.

Its not a matter of Cambodia vs Thailand or which is cheaper/better. This has been going on forever on both forums......
its where ur most comfortable. :beer3:

Bhodi, I know what you mean by Phnom Penh. Used to live there but can't anymore. I'm in Thailand now (because of a now treated medical condition). Soon I will decide where in Cambodia I will move to. If you want peace and quiet, try Kampot, which gets great reviews. I'm more oriented toward Siem Reap, which also has a lot of happy long-term expat residents. You should visit both. The are some good threads on CEO and K440 specifically about these two towns.

It should be quite obvious by now that the Thai govt is actively discouraging "farang" from settling in Thailand while encouraging those who are already there to leave posthaste.

The Thais are starting to get frustrated that some people simply cannot take a hint and try to stay on and on and on. Those days are simply over.

They even told the US Ambassador to "go home" and "go fuck yourself".

Get the picture?

Living in Cambodia might not be the greatest option, but it is probably better to move there (or somewhere) now, rather than wait until the last minute.

Money is not an issue thankfully my only real concern is my use of cannabis, at home I'm licensed for it but here I'm quite clueless. How sure are you about a physician being able to prescribe it to me? I'm under the impression that here they are not that progressive when it comes to medicinal cannabis. Using cannabis is like magic for my situation as it drastically reduces my use of oxycodone. I've been to Snooky and kampot and I like both, I've been here more than a few times, if I can get my plant here I'd be golden.
