Do you have more sympathy for poor females?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

In Cambodia, if boys or men beg, they get nothing, or very close to nothing, with the exception of the very young boys, the disabled, and old men. So they learn, they are wasting their time begging. Females do get given money. So the older boys and men look for a female to get money for them. When they meet someone appropriate, they tell them they love them. The girls fall for it. Then the girls go out begging for themselves and their new-found husband.

Even apart from that scenario, Cambodians share with family. If a child begging gets given food that can be carried, they take it home to their mother.

Sure, but the man has to be able to 'get' a woman first - in which case he'd have something about him personality/physicality wise.

But for those who can't?

In villages where people know each other, people often give to the very poor.

With a lot of the people who beg in Phnom Penh, for example, it is actually a business. It is their way of making money. If there are genuinely very poor people, nobody knows who they are. So they don't get much sympathy.

that's right, same back in the West

the druggies on the streets claim all the begging money, whilst the true poor and desperate get passed over
