You'd better take that plastic bag
You'd better take that plastic bag
Just went to a supermarket and bought a bread ( $0.80). Now, as you know, that thing is already in a plastic wrapper. The cashier put that bread in another plastic bag, and I took the liberty to return this bag. With a hatred look in her eyes she took back the bag and said "barang chgai chguat" (stupid foreign dog). Must be a new Cambodian way to keep the status quo of environmental pollution.
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

They seem to have something of an attitude in Siem Reap. A couple days ago I bargained with a tuk tuk for the price of a half day. Seemingly friendly, after a little bargaining we agreed on a price (which was still a bit high,) and as I was preparing to get into the tuk tuk he turned to his friend and called me 'motherfucking monkey' in Khmer. I stopped, turned and walked away. He chased me down and, with a smile, asked what I was doing. I repeated what he said in Khmer, adding 'knyom?' (me?) at the end. He stared at me silently. I turned and walked away again. This time he didn't chase after me. This sort of thing doesn't happen to me in Phnom Penh.

Yep. Agreed. You beat me to examples.LTO wrote:They seem to have something of an attitude in Siem Reap.
I've noticed that before up there too on numerous occasions.
Last one was when I was buying a bus ticket to Thailand at an agent.
Starting nice, and i just wanted to know the names of the bus companies because I hate a few of the local companies and wanted to avoid them if I could.
A soon as I asked, she was almost shouting "DIFFERENT COMPANIES, BUT ALL THE SAME!"
I said I didn't want to buy a ticket if they wouldn't even tell me the name of the company....., and that was met with a, "fuck you man!"
Seemed a little excessive.
I think they treat the tourists like that there as if they were in Thailand (and no offense to Thailand, but that kind of shit can be common there sometimes).
Anyways, things like that have happened often there like nowhere else (in Cambodia).

Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
Something to consider... they have to deal with LOADS more asshole tourists than the rest of Cambodia. Likely to make them a little bitter towards us.
And based on some of the tourists I've met up there, fairly justified bitterness.

OD, with all due respect, but I don't consider myself to be an asshole. I'm living here for many years, I try to be polite, I think that I know the people, I'm trying to avoid common/typical problems, and still -imagine- after all these years, I still don't like to be called a stupid foreign dog.OrangeDragon wrote:Something to consider... they have to deal with LOADS more asshole tourists than the rest of Cambodia.

Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
this makes me reconsider siem reap as an eventual domicile.

That's no excuse. Give shit back to the assholes, that's fair (although a business and its front office staff should always keep their cool).OrangeDragon wrote:Something to consider... they have to deal with LOADS more asshole tourists than the rest of Cambodia. It's uncalled for and poor business to get upset when the clients/customers are being polite and asking legitimate questions.
