"OD, with all due respect, but I don't consider myself to be an asshole. I'm living here for many years, I try to be polite, I think that I know the people, I'm trying to avoid common/typical problems, and still -imagine- after all these years, I still don't like to be called a stupid foreign dog.
Actually, when she called you ""barang chgai chguat" I think rabid foreigner would be a more accurate translation. "Chgai chguat" is Cambodian for rabies. Not that you should feel any better, but perhaps she perceived you as frothing at the mouth. I certainly don't know; I wasn't there.

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Sure... but after they get 200 foreign assholes a week, what are they supposed to think of the next foreigner they see? That he'll be the one nice one!?Francis wrote:OD, with all due respect, but I don't consider myself to be an asshole. They get conditioned. Guilt by association.

When I was the next foreigner they saw, I was the nice one. Did everything politely, smiled, agreed to a price that was in his favor, probably would have given him a good tip too. I did this even though the vast majority of tuk tuk drivers foreigners encounter are annoying assholes that won't allow you a moment's peace. And he called me a motherfucking monkey for it, with a two-faced smile.OrangeDragon wrote:Sure... but after they get 200 foreign assholes a week, what are they supposed to think of the next foreigner they see? I guess if I should understand him for calling me a monkey merely because other foreigners have been rude, given that pretty much every tuktuk driver in Cambodia that foreigners meet are annoying assholes, tuktuk drivers should also be understanding of foreigners who treat them poorly. If they are not understanding of why tourists might be rude to them, I see no reason for foreigners to be understanding of rude and bigoted behavior of tuk tuk drivers.

Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
Having quite a few tuktuk friends, some of them are increasing feeling frustrated at companies monopolizing the transportation market i.e. hotels, tour services esp Korean tour companies; Hana and Mode Tours. If I understand correctly, tuktuks and motodops are not allowed to have their own union; whereas companies can.
At the same time though, a lot of tuktuk drivers who are making good dough during the high seasons are wasting their money on booze and KTV and moan during the low seasons. I think some are starting to realize that time is changing, they can no longer rely on the good income where they used to make in the past. Additionally, a massive protest might be inevitable if the APSARA continues to add more Chinese electric vans or what not.

Stiff shit to them. Having had to deal with their mafia shit and commissions etc.. for years I have no sympathy for the cunts. They'd sell their own mothers for a dollar. Not one moral amongst them all.flying chicken wrote:Having quite a few tuktuk friends, some of them are increasing feeling frustrated at companies monopolizing the transportation market i.e. hotels, tour services esp Korean tour companies; Hana and Mode Tours.
Actually being insulting to a paid customer, like LTO said, it's only happened to me in Siem Reap. They've insulted me elsewhere for turning them down in other places though.

Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
The choice of words used by the tuktuk spoken to LTO might be a bit extreme, and I am quite surprised really...I honestly cannot think of any reason why he would call a potential passenger 'kadui meh ah svah' (you mother fucking monkey). Likely than not he would get told off by other tuktuk drivers or motodops nearby. Anyway, I often hangout in front of Caltex gas station and nearby at night in a tuktuk and booze with them; we often mock foreigners walking past esp attractive females such as free tuk tuk ride for you or 50 cents dollar to pub street even though we know they were not interested but we don't curse or anything.
They are pretty harmless imo.

Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
I had one guy go all mafia on me outside of Empire one night because I walked away from his opening offer of $8 for a $4 fare - I said, "Not a tourist, you start too high." He got really upset and was running alongside us warning the other tuktuk drivers off picking us up, all the while coming down to the $4, and then got truly upset when I refused to take his offer at $4. Only the second time I've felt things might escalate with a tuktuk driver. The other was with one of the mongrels outside GSM, which turned into a shouting match and a lesson to me to not get into shouting matches with tuktuk mafia. Otherwise they have been only pleasant and polite, and now we have our own tuktuk, really curious and looking out for us.

That's a benefit with having a Khmer partner, they don't dare say that. My gf has bitched out plenty of Tuk Tuk guys and beggars on the street for such comments. Some she wouldn't even tell me what they said lol.
Re: You'd better take that plastic bag
Yes, he wouldn't have said that with my wife there because he knows she would understand. He said it in the belief that I wouldn't understand, and he was wrong about that. And I don't always travel with my wife.thePeck wrote:That's a benefit with having a Khmer partner, they don't dare say that. Edit: Sorry, I don't mean that to sound as snippy as it does.

No worries, but I've actually had them try it even with her. I guess assuming she's just a long-time bar girl and has no care for me except as an ATM.LTO wrote: Yes, he wouldn't have said that with my wife there because he knows she would understand. Side note: When bargaining price many have said something along the lines of, "You're Khmer, help Khmer. He Barang." Which she explodes on them and/or walks away. Few times we've taken the boss to the beach or Kampot and after returning the Tuk Tuk drivers wanted almost 3 times as much from Old Market to our house. Which we were at the buss drop off by Night Market.
