If you are going to help people..

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

If you are going to help people..

Post by vladimir »

Be aware that generally, it is a thankless job

I don't do it for the thanks, it makes me happy, but you'd be surprised at the negative feedback you get trying to help people

Today some unnamed person asked me for advice on a teaching job

I gave them the best advice, with all the best intentions in the world, based on about 20 years' experience in the industry, and a good knowledge of the school they are applying to

This person, by their own admission, has little experience (less than 1 year), and is not even sure they want to be a teacher

They want to apply at a private school, offering great perks (visa, WP, healthcare, living stipend etc)

So they want to know: what is a decent stipend, and I tell them, just take the damn job, it's a great school, and this is a good offer

Then I get backfire...I'm not impartial..blah, blah, blah

OK, piss off, what the hell do I know?

Point being, if you're going to help people here, be it with jobs, housing or general information, there's always that entitled group (bigger than you think) that demands you bend to what they think they deserve.

Reason I left PPJA, simply too many clowns who resent help.

Rant over.

You see the same shit on forums, some clown wants to know about visas, Kiwi gives them solid advice, based on well-known laws, and he gets shit for it.

No more.

No good deed goes unpunished, and all that stuff, unfortunately.

I used to do the same for the same reasons. Now, I size them up and get to know them before I tell them anything.

The last guy was a lying, manipulative, POS Brit neighbor with a fake degree and some criminal convictions back home. After I gave him advice he tried to play me for free drinks and dinner. I ran him off, post haste. If
I could find out where he works I'd drop him in the grease!

Here, let me help you.

Grow up you little martyr; it's an occupational hazard.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Uh, that was my point.

Perhaps I should have used single-syllable words throughout the post?

I'll remember next time, I forgot you have special needs.

Apologies.

I was just thinking about this today. People pay an expert to do something then argue with them because it’s not the way they would have done it.
This often happens to me with CVs, some people just can’t handle change.

I take payment in full up front, it’s a lot simpler.

Yeah, I did a lot of work pro-bono and on a volunteer basis.
