Yawn . . . Clueless Tuktuk/taxi drivers

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

To be fair the OP sounds a bit clueless. Obviously speaking Khmer helps a lot. Locals tend to use pagodas, markets and other landmarks for navigation, street numbers not so much and they are highly unlikely to know many western bars/ restaurants. The Mobitel HQ isn't a big tower either, it's about 4 stories high.

I thought the story of the taxi driver with a GPS app would at least know how to use it. To say nothing of the hotel tuktuk who doesn't know Sihanouk. I'm used to guiding taxis around Cambodia and Vietnam by all the methods you list. But these drivers went beyond. But really, if you provide public transport, you might learn a thing or two about the city you work in, local or foreigner haunts. It seems they don't and most of the posters in this thread have been similarly underwhelmed.

Yeah, fair enough, most are pretty clueless.

Never actualy had a problem. On the rare occasion I have used their services I find three short phrases suffice, turn right, turn left and straight on.TBH you dont really need to know that in Khmer, one can just gesture by hand :D

My usual destinations, ordered by likelihood of ending up in the right spot: closest wat > closest market > geographic feature (river etc) > sangkat > street

Yes, all that stuff about country tuk tuks doesn't explain why a proper taxi hasn't got a clue.

no matter how much you negotiate, a 6 KM tuk tuk ride in PP won't be under 5 dollars.
while in Bangkok I just paid 77baht (less than 3USD) for more than a 7KM ride, in a taxi.

YOU might not be able to negotiate that, but Mrs Stroppy regularly does with drivers that she knows and doesn't know for under $4.

Mobitel building a tower? Speaking enough Khmer to direct a tuk tuk is not that difficult. We are supposed to be the clever ones, aren't we? Phrase books are quite handy in Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
