WoW! Is This the First Gay/Lesbian Wedding in Cambodia?

Post by General Mackevili »

It seems that two Cambodian lesbians have gotten married in Cambodia yesterday. Is this even legal? Is it the first? I don't know about gay rights in Cambodia, but I would have assumed this was illegal.

Congrats to them and a beautiful wedding!

Quite a fair number barangs present for a country wedding. I wonder if this was some liberal NGO's idea. In any case, I do not know about the legality either, but a formal recognition is contrary to traditional beliefs. Also I noticed there were no Buddhist priests in the photos, was this some liberal Christian ceremony. Look out Berkley here comes Cambodia.

Actually, no. There was a lesbian wedding back in the early 90s.

More info:
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/lift/same-same-married
In 1995 two women were allowed to legally marry in Kandal province, a unique occurrence in a country where gay marriage is outlawed. Khav Sokha, who married another woman named Pum Eth, said in an interview with The Phnom Penh Post, “The authorities thought it was strange, but they agreed to tolerate it because I have three children already (from a previous marriage). They said that if we were both single (and childless), we would not be allowed to get married because we could not produce children”. Thus, it is a fully-acknowledged marriage, with official approval, and there was not really any reaction to it. According to coverage in The Phnom Penh Post in 1996, the wedding was a popular event, with 250 people coming to the ceremony and partying, including Buddhist monks and high officials from the province.

Thanks for that extra info mekongmouse. It appears however that neither of the partners had children in this union. Frankly, I have no opinion one way or the other, but I know that in the village where I live, such a wedding would be seen as theater, not civil law.

Also found this while trying to find the article about the 90s marriage:
Srorn said some gay couples have lived together for more than 40 years, and he knows that at least 15 have obtained marriage certificates – documents that identify one recipient as the “husband” and the other as the “wife”.
According to Article 6 of the current Marriage Law, signed in 1989, “Marriage shall be prohibited to a person whose sex is the same sex as the other.”
It also prohibits marriage to “a person whose penis is impotent”, those suffering from “leprous, tuberculosis, cancerous or venereal diseases, which are not completely cured” along with the “insane” and those possessing “mental defect”.
The 1993 Constitution, on the other hand, is light on such specifics, saying simply that individuals have the right to choose their partners, and it seems that growing numbers of local authorities are focusing on this more expansive understanding of marriage, said Srorn.

Interesting stuff.

That little ugly dwarf must be the "groom":

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

I'm against marriage equality. Not that I have anything against homosexuals. Just in my experience (and 50%+ of others) that marriage is a horrid thing that only ends in divorce or death. Therefore why the Fuck do people want it? There is no happy way out
