Work Permits fo Foreigners(again)
I realize this topic was covered here previously, but in today's PPP these words jumped out at me, " In July, the ministries of labour and interior announced their intention to begin enforcing laws requiring foreign workers and expatriates to hold work permits." The word that caught my attention was of course, "expatriate." So, here is my position, I am retired and no longer work here and when I did no one told the teachers about a work permit. Now, all of that is old hat to those who have been following the situation. But for me I have never seen expatriates lumped together with the employed.
Is this newspaper story on the money? Does anyone have a more official take that either confirms or negates this? And more importantly what actions besides capitulating or leaving do you have as a contingency plan?
The full article can be found here. http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/l ... -cent-rule Since it refers to business obligations it might be of interest to those who hire foreigners.

The latest reports are that the unemployed and volunteers will not need work permits. This is subject to change, but it seems likely that for now, those not earning in Cambodia are safe. I did a blog post about it here: http://www.movetocambodia.com/expat-lif ... -cambodia/

Thank you for your quick reply. Unfortunately, "wait and see" does not soothe the nerves.

I understand, it's frustrating! The other issue is that depending on your age, if you have been here for many years it may be hard to convince the police that you haven't worked here in previous years. However, it appears that they are checking current passports only to determine length of stay in the country.taabarang wrote:Thank you for your quick reply. IN ur situation since u have an have held a 1 year extension i assumeThe police and entourage were just at our school this morning regarding work permits. Our school is looking after the application process we only needed to provide 4 photos and a photocopy of visa and passport. So far no money has been requested. But the police presence was unnerving for all of us, there were at least 10 police and 10 "officials" walking around all over the premises making us feel like we were all criminals. Watch out there coming your way!!

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Wouldn't previous visas be kept on record, in computer files by immigration for example?

Yes, I posted an experience of this on a previous topic. Even with a new passport, with a new pp number, immigration knew that I had a still had a valid visa on my previous pp.taabarang wrote:Wouldn't previous visas be kept on record, in computer files by immigration for example?

Would anyone happen to know how far back the visa records go?

Did you have any trace of an old visa in your new passport?PSD-Kiwi wrote:Yes, I posted an experience of this on a previous topic. Or did you enter Cambodia with a BLANK new passport and they found it?
Hmmm..... I'm guessing nobody, even God, knows the answer to this.taabarang wrote:Would anyone happen to know how far back the visa records go?

True enough General. If you hadn't posted this response I was going to restate the issue on General Chatter because of a larger readership. In any case you don't know who might have drunk a few with an immigration official who wanted to "praktih his Englih" with a foreigner or who might have already trod the path.
