Will they know what Double Lines mean?

Post by Doc67 »

This morning they were painting the centre lines on the newly resurfaced Norodom Blvd, and it looks very much improved. Well done someone!

However, it struck me that what they were painting was not the same as before, as far as I can remember. They are painting double centre lines with a single broken line at a junction. This reminds me of the American style road layout and means do not cross from either side, except at the broken lines at the junctions. It also means the same in the UK with solid lines indicating no crossing. I suspect that rule is fairly worldwide.

I was wondering if anyone has told the Cambodian drivers what these fancy bright yellow lines all mean, i.e. staying on the correct side of the road, even if that means waiting patiently behind others cars, and that includes Rolls Royce and Mercedes cars? Even motorbikes!

I am looking for road signs to this effect but, alas, have not seen any.

The lines are fairly straight as well!

If you've been in Southeast Asia more than a few weeks, you know that these lines are purely decorative. They just paint them on the roads to make them look more interesting.

Sigmoid is right. Driving between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, overtaking on double lines was more the rule than the exception.

Lines are for your points. You score 10 points if you crash your car on the right side of the line but only 5 if you have to cross the line to the left. 1 point for a left side foot path stack and 2 for a right side shop drive through.
Taxi driver was telling me the other day 10 bonus points if you can get the number plates off the car/bike in a sober fashion and bolt before any one can stop you and 20 if you can do all this while still on the phone.

Better still there's a freshly painted pedestrian crossing around the corner from me. As if anyone knows what that means.

In Bangladesh, the lines on a 3 lane highway/motorway were used by the locals to provide guidance for a 5 lane traffic flow, plus an overtaking margin-

3 lanes of traffic, roughly tracking down between the lines.
2 lanes of traffic religiously tracking the nicely painted lines, tuk tuks with their front wheel, cars straddling the line.
The overtaking lane was wherever they bloody felt like, so long as there was nothing in the way. (Soft squidgy things like people don’t count) Often, the gap in the barrier separating opposite direction traffic providing access to the lower density opposite carriageway would facilitate overtaking and a random increase in the number of available lanes.
Traffic lights existed to control the speed of traffic- green for go, amber having often been stolen, and red for go faster.

Sleeping policemen/speed bumps/traffic calming ridges were used to arrest vehicle speeds. Especially useful with 70/80kph traffic whose suspension ceased being so about 30 years, or several hundred kilos of welded on repairs prior.
Policemen with stout sticks being the final part of the puzzle, taking aim at any exposed head travelling at under 30kph.

There were road laws written down, but I guess these are largely irrelevant when a very significant proportion of the drivers can’t read to do any learning, and the rich bastards aren’t going to give a damn, anyway.

There seems to be some commonality...

Coming from a country which generally respects the zebra crossing with drivers almost always stopping to allow people to cross, it baffles me what the point of these are in most other countries around the world when nobody takes a blind bit of notice of them.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

Don't do them lines.

Silence, exile, and cunning.
