Will there be significant changes to the one year business Visa?

Post by obelisks »

I just returned to Thailand after spending two weeks in Cambodia.
During that visit I heard more than once rumours or speculation that there are plans not to issue the existing one year business Visa to foreigners unless it is accompanied with a work permit.
The argument being if a foreigner doesn't need a work permit then they don't need a business visa? Or if they don't have a business then why do they need anything more than a tourist Visa?
I don't know how much truth there is to all this but in some ways it seems like the kind of weird logic which is currently being applied in Thailand regarding the shakeup in tourist visas.
Has anyone heard anything similar?

There is no evidence to support this. Particularly given that they issue the visa prior to issuing a work permit; it seems impossible that this could be implemented.

I realise there is no evidence but those telling me this seemed quite convinced that this is where things are headed.
I should also mention when I was in Koh Kong I was also introduced to a retired immigration officer who said there will be significant changes at the end of this year affecting Cambodiabut he wouldn't go any further than that.guess we just have to wait and see

I was talking to an NGO teacher on Saturday - their share house was raided last week by Immigration Police checking passports and work permits. Apparently the police knew exactly who was staying at the house (possibly from the school) and specifically asked about the one westerner that was out of the house at the time. All had the relevant documents, although the IPs stated if they didn't have the WPs they could buy them directly from the IPs.

What was concerning was that the IPs were asking for work permits for the 16yo and 14yo western girls in the house, and could not understand they were students, not garment factory workers. I've seen the IP goon squads nipping up and down 271 a lot recently, obviously making a dollar.

The point is that one of these days they will have rounded up most viets and Africans and other Asian aliens - they are working on it daily.

When that day comes it will be open season on white immigrants, and it will be expensive to fix on the spot. I would suggest that for a quiet life, and the price of a weekend on the town, people get their documents in order. My company sorted mine, all good.
