Wildlife and birdwatching nearish Phnom Penh
Desperate to do a bit of birdwatching oit of the city.
Does anyone know of any good areas for birdwatching/general wildlife within an hour or so drove from Phnom Penh?
Or any tributaries/heavily wooded areas that would likely have a good range of birds?
Thanks!

They eat everything in the province, what exactly are you hoping to see? Try a sanctuary or a zoo.

Why not just go to Angry Birds Bar
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.

Don't mind fax, he does not know what he is talking about in this instance. There is excellent birdwatching in the Kingdom, including species that are extinct in neighboring countries.
First bird to look for would be Cambodian Tailorbird, only described as recently as 2009. Within easy reach is Koh Dach which has lots of birds. The best spots are regrettably further away but well worth a visit (Preak Toal, Tonle Sap floodplains, Purst grasslands, and ATT). I reckon I have 300+ birds on my Cambodia list.

Thanks a lot Hanno.
I've been to Koh Dach and have seen some good stuff (spotted owlet, pied kingfisher, chestnut munia, Asian koel, and an unidentified species of bee eater amongst others).
Could you let me know of any species you've seen on the island, or that are fairly common, or at least findable there?
I'm guessing it's not likely to find the tailorbird there?
I'm thinking of going down to Tonle Bati and the surrounding areas - they look pretty woody, couple of lakes etc. I'm guessing there must be quite a bit of birdlife down there.

I'm not a bird watcher, but I don't think you need to go far away from the city to see some nice birds.
I know of one poster on this board who has posted some nice bird pics that he took near the pumping station of Boeung Tumpon. There's water and some long grasses around there with lots of little birds, as well as wading birds in the boeung.

Simon, the spot for the Tailorbird used to be north of PP, around the Garden City Golf club. I have not been for a couple of years and do not know what the area is like now.
Koh Dach should yield Spotted, Red Collared and Zebra Doves, Greater and Lesser Coucal, Asian Koel, Plaintive Cuckoo, Palm Swift, Yellow, Cinnamon, and Black Bittern, all Egrets and Chinese Pond Heron, Common, Pied, and White-breasted Kingfisher, Little Green and Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Indian Roller, Coppersmith Barbet, Brown Shrike (if they haven't gone yet), Malaysian Pied Fantail, Common Iora, Streak-eared and Yellow-vented Bulbul, Plain and Yellow-bellied Prinias, Common and White-vented (Great) Myna, Olive-backed Sunbird, Plain-backed Sparrow, Scaly-breasted Munia.

There seem to be a whole lot of birds around Choeung Ek, the area in the south west of Boeung Tumpun.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Amazing - thank you!!
I'm sure I saw a cinammon bittern and a greater coucal but I didn't get a good enough eye to confirm.
Any tips on the best place to go on Koh Dach for any of these? Or is it just a case of wondering around anf seeing whst you see?

In terms of a specific location I should head for, is there a road name or something that I could get a taxi too that would put me in the right area to have a look around?
