Just wonder around. In the center of the island is an area that gets flood. The thick vegetation there is good for birds. I have also seen lots of birds at the two tips. Greater Coucals are really common there, as are Cinnamon Bittern.

It's right by the killing fields site.Simon_Miles wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 1:55 pmThanks John.John Bingham wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 1:46 pm There seem to be a whole lot of birds around Choeung Ek, the area in the south west of Boeung Tumpun.
In terms of a specific location I should head for, is there a road name or something that I could get a taxi too that would put me in the right area to have a look around?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Good on you Simon. The Cambodian list is over 500 species now.
Keep lookout for Cambodian Tailorbird anywhere around Phnom Penh. If my memory serves me well they have been spotted right in the middle of town. (??)
Try to get a copy of "Birds of Cambodia - an annotated checklist" Fred Goes.
Not a guide, but gives masses of relevant details about the significance of any sightings you make.
Detailed historical records of sightings of every species, in every part of the country.
About $30 bucks and a must, even for a visiting birder.
I am not a real birder in classic sense, but have done some interesting work in specialised areas; migratory waders on the coast, and River Tern on the Mekong and the Lake.
I will send you a couple of contacts in a couple of hours. Busy people but usually ready to share info.
Check your Personal Message box tonight.
Are you going birding elsewhere in the country?

Genuinely appreciate the help.
I'm gonna go to one of the further sites that Hanno mentioned in a couple of weeks. I work Monday to Friday so travelling North by coach rather than plane (due to funds) is quite tricky to squeeze in on the weekends.
I've only moved here from England recently, where I birded daily, so just trying to suss out any good spits down this way.
I'll look into places I can note down any rarities I see - aware of how important it is from a conservation point of view.
Will also check out that book you mentioned.
Thanks again - and will check my inbox!

Don't mind fax, he does not know what he is talking about in this instance. There is excellent birdwatching in the Kingdom, including species that are extinct in neighboring countries.
First bird to look for would be Cambodian Tailorbird, only described as recently as 2009. Within easy reach is Koh Dach which has lots of birds. The best spots are regrettably further away but well worth a visit (Preak Toal, Tonle Sap floodplains, Purst grasslands, and ATT). I reckon I have 300+ birds on my Cambodia list.

Hanno - any ideas on the type of kingfisher this is?
Too much white around the neck for a common, and too much orange on the front to be a collared (is what I thought).
It was in Kampot

First one is a Plain Prinia, second Pied Bushchat, last one I think is a Coucal. How big was it?Simon_Miles wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 4:41 pm And also any idea on these?
