Wiki wiki

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Wiki wiki

Post by OrangeDragon »

So... we're working on a CEO wiki. A section of the site dedicated to information about cambodia, being an expat, etc. Its integrated with the forums and will use the same username/login to be an editor... you'll just have to add yourself to the usergroup that makes you one (but you will be kicked out and banned from the wiki if you're found to be abusing it).

It's not even close to ready... installed and configured, but we're still deciding on the policies/core contents/etc... the reason I'm posting about it now (I hope to be live and public with it in a couple of months) is to gauge interest of people who would like to be editors, as well as any people who would be interested in being early editors before its live.

Any takers? Looking for people with ideas for what should be in the core articles... the ones we populate with information before going live... as well as people willing to help make the content for them.

What I have myself from just sort of spitballing ideas, in no particular order, are:

Main Page
>Expat Life In Cambodia

>>Transportation
>>>Public Transportation

As you can see... a lot to fill in. And I'm sure there are more ideas for what to put in there than the ones I have... so feel free to pitch suggestions. Also feel free to PM me if you're interested in being a content editor.

These will all be factual information (with citations where possible), not OP-ED. That's the biggest rule really... its an encyclopedia, not a soapbox.

Of the moving to Cambodia blog/book,

although still a good idea for newbies that are coming here rather than going there

One of the main ideas/benefits of a wiki is that its more fluid than those other formats. A good example is the fact that the 440 thread on visa details hasn't been updated with the new prices. It's obsolete information waiting on the 1 or 2 people who can edit it to notice... where if there were 50 people who could edit it they would have likely done so by now.

Problem with a printed book of information as well, but worse... when it changes you can't recall the books and replace them.

That's why we're using a group to say which users can/can't update it. We can kick people out of it who abuse it/etc.

I mean, if these guys can manage it with so many people editing it... i'm sure we can figure it out with just a few hundred accessing it:

It's all about the troll:contributor ratio. Cambodian forums sit around the 1:1

I'm not sure the wiki idea would work so well here, but maybe a sticky section/subforum of threads with those subjects and then people can contribute as normal with threads and such. That way the "anyone can contribute" idea still stands but also the "rating system" (stars thing) and "comments section" is still available.

I say it works because of youtube and this example. Anyone on youtube can post of videos of things as well, but also, anyone can vote up or down. While I agree that yes a lot of trolls and whack jobs exist here in the expat community, a simple "vote bar" and comment like Youtube's will tell people at a glance how much they can trust the info. Not everyone likes to write a lot, but a simple "yes or no" click (thumbs up or down) plus comment section (posts that can be voted on "like or no") is actually a fairly accurate way to tell how valuable the content is at a glance.
