why you lie me?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

why you lie me?

Post by BklynBoy »

Unsure if anyone else has had this experience---

When possibly making plans to meet up and things change --- some of my khmer friends (male/female) will be like.." why you lie me"

haha.. obviously i wasn't lying but they are interpreting it as a lie. Or do they realize its not a lie but don't have a strong enough grasp of the language so all they know how to express it as a lie?

I was trying to explain.. it just became to frustrating -- this was via text... maybe in person would of been different

thoughts?

You want to discuss the finer points of bar girl English? What time is it in your time zone? Not 3 am by any chance?

the logic here is simple,
if you say something, and it doesnt happen, it means you lie...
never say anything unless you are certain it will happen, if plans change, be prepared for the wrath
you get used to it after a while
never make any promises
if you make promises that dont happen, you will never be forgiven

hahah that made me laugh... the bullshit guy part.... but on a serious note when people make plans,,,things change, shit comes up..anything can happen.. doesn't that happen in khmer culture?
when someone makes a commitment but then somethign comes up? you reach out and explain.... doesn't that happen in any culture?
or am i taking this shit waaaay to serious?

also @lambo... how can you be certain anything will happen? in life, shit comes up.. people get delayed.. plans change or modified... but i hear you on getting used to it..after a certain point, i just was like whatever..and its not only bar girls... some dude said i told him we would hang out..which i did... i think one time i said i am going out if he wants to meet at bar... he couldnt make it... then later said i lied cause we didn't hang out.. i said dude.. you have a mouth also right? you can ask me to make plans... don't put it all on me.. lol wtf.. anyway thats that..

"if you make promises that dont happen, you will never be forgiven..."
That is of course a one way street in Cambodia.
Taam piet samdai min applies usually when they make a threat. On other occasions there is a lot of leeway and squirm room.
