why the english visit Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. No shit! Raybull is on something...or he lives in a very expensive part of Asia... like Tokyo or Singapore.

I'm also from Victoria and I can tell you it's a bloody expensive place to live. Rents are high, you're taxed to death and you can't smoke anywhere (if you can afford to smoke).
I once compared living budget with UK and it came out that you would be warmer here, but would eat far better there. Smoking tailor mades and heavy boozing aside. Also I'm mostly fish and veg. Both mainly cooking at home. The cost of food here sways the rent increase there. That was worked out on a Uk minimum wage v Cam tefler's wage four years ago.

I should have qualified that as middle class family lifestyle, say a family with a couple kids that buys a new car every five years, owns their own home and the kids get a good education. Obviously if you're a renter and smokes, booze and whores factor significantly into your budget then you're better off here.

I am a consultant in the area of heath service development and delivery. When in Australia in the past I have held fairly high positions at three medical schools mainly on health related research and teaching on masters in public health courses. Before retiring I worked on developing the health service coverage plans here and also as consultant for the Department of Health and Aging in Australia. As such I consider myself a fairly average middle class guy.

I sold my property in Australia a long time ago, but a similar apartment to the one I have here would cost in excess of two million. Here it costs 200,000 if I were to buy. In Australia I probably spent close on $6000 a month, and here I spend probably less than $3000 for a considerably better lifestyle. Also bear in mind that when you work here your company/organisation pays medical assistance, school fees and often accommodation with additional per diem allowances. I would be interested to know how you arrive at your conclusion.

Nah, he might have meant 大哼 - the electricity supply here will do that to most things.

Renters who smoke are all alcoholic 'Johns'?

Seriously though, I know what you meant. A lot depends on a person's situation. If one were to be raising kids in Asia, I think one would have to factor in the rather significant cost of tuition at a good international school - which is bloody expensive (unless you're on faculty). I'm too old for kids now, but would never have sent them to a public school in Korea or China (or SE Asia)... as I would in Canada.
You could be next.

I wouldn't consider these expat families (ie. upper management for corps, NGO directors, etc.) on packages with family incomes >100k and nearly another 100k in benefits 'middle class', so it's a non sequitur.
If you put aside special cases where foreign investment and local speculation have hugely distorted property markets, such as parts of Australia and NZ, West coast of Canada and California, etc., where many older middle class families have become property millionaires, I'd say most typical western middle class families buy and live in properties worth 200-400k while grossing family incomes around 60-90k.
For arguments sake, let's say a middle class family in Tampa Fl. (average house price roughly 220k) grosses 80k, nets 65k a year, has a 20y mortgage on a 300k house at 3%, spends 25k$ on the basics, and buys a new SUV loaded for 50k every five years. Kids go to a decent school, 2k yearly property taxes, 2k on utilities and 5k healthcare premiums.
That same family moves to PP, not even equivalent to a fourth tier Chinese city in terms if infrastructure nevermind any western city, grosses 80k, nets 70k(?), has a mortgage on a 200k property at 8%, spends 25k on the basics again, and buys that same SUV for 120k$ on the gray market (oops no warranty or dealer incentives) every five years. 20-30k a year for good schooling for two kids. Anybody want to run the numbers over a twenty year time span?

Sure you'll get nickled and dimed more out west, but the biggest costs are housing, food and entertainment, transport, and education. Mortgage rates, vehicles, and education costs are all much higher here.
