This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! Ok Samouth, I have a question -I'll try to phrase this delicately - don't be offended. :stir:

Why do young Khmer guys spend so much time looking at themselves in mirrors ? They do it in private, they do it in public and if there is a mirror anywhere around, there will probably be a young Khmer in front of it looking at himself.

I'm sure that you probably haven't really noticed this or you think it's normal, but in most western countries most guys wouldn't even admit to owning a mirror, let alone look at themselves where people can see them doing it.

When we talk about cultural differences, this is something that struck me about Cambodia.
Or is this something that goes on elsewhere in the world and I just haven't noticed ?

We enjoy it when Khmer transport large mirrors on the back of a moto - there's always a string of young Khmer following behind, checking their hair.

Yes, but while I'm checking on the neighbours I'm not looking at myself LOL. Does sound a bit creepy though...

But, I meant "in private", Cambodian style - as in not in the street - it's often hard not to see/hear what goes on at the neighbours' place. For a while I had a group of about 5 guys living across the road sharing a 2 room flat - think they only had one mirror because there was always someone standing in front of it.

That was your One Direction poster, my friend. You need to ease up on the herb now.

Not being one to be racist, but learning from history, if the French had covered the Maginot Line with mirrors, the young German (Men) soldiers would have never been able to walk around it. So, it is not just the Khmers.

Apologies to any one who is German, has German family or friends, had a Dachshund or has ever eaten a Bratwurst but it is true.

Back to Cambodia and the cultural divide. We are not embarrassed by the same things.

In a country where appearances count for a lot, people do things in public that westerners find really embarrassing or just plain rude - guys looking in the mirror in public (but it's ok for girls) O:-) , picking your nose, arranging your hair continually (also ok for girls) O:-) , squeezing zits. Western guys would lose face if they did these things - except for picking your nose I guess.(But that's not ok for girls.)

Western guys like people to think that they are just naturally so hansum, and they don't need to look in a mirror or do anything because they are just born looking good. Khmer guys don't care if everyone knows that they have to work at it.

So, who's vain again ? :beer3:

Unfortunately I cannot find the article, but a few years ago there was a study that did a "Vanity Index" for men. IIRC Philippines won by a landslide. I don't think Cambodia was included in the study.

I wonder if those you have noticed are all so called (Gay). I agree that young khmer guy looking at themselves in mirrors and they do it everywhere. Personally i really don't look too much at the mirror. So when you spend too much in front of mirror, people would judge that you are gay.
