But in our case, my dad is not really a foreigner, he is Cambodian but has a foreign nationality, and had worked and lived overseas before coming back to Cambodia.

He is still married to my mom who is Cambodian too but she now lives in Europe. He started to have an affair here in Cambodia while my mom was living here too. And then he lied to her and us and made her go back, with the excuse that my younger brother and sister needed to get education in Europe.

So I was here when I caught him having this affair with his younger mistress (she is 6 years younger than me and 54 years younger than my dad). He told me it was only a past time because he was lonely and so he had me keeping the secret, but my mom's cousins knew and the whole affair broke out. My dad had lied to me though because he had promised his mistress to get married with her, and he did. They had a Cambodian traditional and civil marriage here, but he is still legally married to my mom back home.

Ever since, to please her and her family, he has tried to sell my mom's lands here, my own and my older sister's assets in Cambodia and he tried to make me sell my property to repay a debt he owes to family friends. Most attempts failed thanks to local officials who contacted us. In the meantime, he used his money to buy some land and build houses in his name and his new wife's name.

For us, we don't care about the real estate he bought after meeting his mistress, but why trying to dispossess his own children and his first wife? Because he is pressured by his new wife and her family. And all the while, my mom is paying back his debts back home. So in my view, in this particular case, it is not only the pursuit of financial security, but it's also greed.

I understand though that people and relationships are all different and they don't automatically follow the same pattern, but I just wanted to share that one true story.
