The bad thing is that Western Women have no understanding of what women in third world counties must go through (although they think they do from taking some college courses) and foolishly think that they just "shouldn't take it anymore"
a rise up against there male oppressors, well that can get them hurt or even killed. Some also think that Western men who choose to seek out and marry these ladies are creeps, loosers etc, etc, so what does that say about the foreign
women they purport to want to help???? As if to say they are so stupid or desperate they'll go with anyone! For some this maybe true but a bad-to mediocre life in US for example sure beats a bad to mediocre life where they come from.
I do not think most Americans know what a truly bad life is.

I've heard some grueling stories out of the gf's family in the boonies, plenty of violence, alcoholism, hustling going on.

The fact that I don't slap her around everyday, help out with the dishes and laundry, is pretty revolutionary in her eyes.

But is it better to be an overweight single western woman with a fast food addiction, living in a country that pays $80mil a day in loan interest to China?

I don't think the opinions of these Western ideologically motivated theorists and bloviators are relevant to real relations between barangs and Khmer gf's.

Why I don't think so? I'm interested in men who are late 30s and early 40s but I never think I want $$$ from them. But good finance might be a good dad for kids' education. :p

Some great posts, especially from the OP,
Some points id like to add, to help support some posts, is that their is also the family hierarchy to put into the mix, how its seen as the kids responsibility to support the parents, in a country where theres no retirement etc, when parents get too old/sick to work its the kids job to help support the parents, having a husband who is responsible with financial security would appeal more attractive than a younger guy who likes to go out and drink with his friends...
I have a fair few friends who "dont care about the money" but its more about maturity, responsibility, stability and security... to which a lot of younger males cant provide...

in some of the lyrics to one of my favourite khmer songs she actually says "ស្នេហ៍វ័យចំណាស់ លួមលោងបំពេ។" & "គ្រប់គ្នាច្រណែននឹងវាសនាស្រី។ ព្រោះមានជីវ៉ាស្ម័គ្រស្មោះមេត្រី។" which basically says she 'loves older men because they are very careful of her' & 'that everyone is jealous of her future because he (the older man) is so honest and careful'...

and as most khmer songs are, its vastly based on Romantic Love and not money, i find Cambodians a very lovesick race, you only have to listen to nearly any khmer song and its all nearly always about love, longing for love and the heartbreak of love...

i know plenty of women in the western world who prefer "older men" its not an unusual interest, i think a big factor is probably due to this being a far poorer country and the financial security of the family plays a much bigger part in it than it does in the west, where i guess its more based on "sexual attraction" or their flash "sports car"

and i also guess peoples opinions vastly originates from the crowd they hang around with, if youre an expat who just hangs around with other expats with their younger girlfriends then thats the only opinion you might see, but i see a far greater number of similar aged khmer couples (even khmer/barang couples) than i see with a greater than 10 year age gap, but as i say it is far more common or maybe seen as more normal over here than in the west, i think nearly all my expat friends have girlfriends in their 30's+ or where both are in their 20's
