Why isn't cycling more popular in Cambodia?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Used to be this way in Thailand until about 10 years ago when cycling started getting popular,
Now you see all thai groups most days around the country and bike races and the "king" even gets out sometimes

The way they disassociate themselves from the poor is, the fancy clothes and $3,000 bikes

we even have a "bike for dad" day on the last kings birthday

Unless you're very overweight I guess.
Some of us are fat challenged. I would be less fit and more fat if I didnt cycle. I would like to encourage all fat challenged people to exercise. Even if you lose just a little fat, it is beneficial. As your fitness level increases, it gets easier.

I remember seeing a man who was fatter than me on a motorbike. I felt like saying, if I rode a motorbike I would look like you, and if you rode a bicycle you would look like me. I didnt say it.

Don't know about LOS, but there is a bike store in Ha Noi where the cheapest Tri-bike is $4K and road bikes go to $8K. So much for poor people....

You're not. That's what I assumed. (Unless you're very overweight I guess). If you work a 9-5 type of job, you're cycling in the coolest parts of the day. And in the hotter months, just cycle a bit slower. I very rarely turn up for work sweating like a pig.
Everyone I know who rides a bicycle has huge sweat stains on their back (and sometimes ass) when they get to work. It sucks unless you ride at 6am or are actually going for a weekend pleasure ride. It's also in no way safer as it doesn't matter whether you're going slower or not, the SUV going 40 is going to hit you with the same strength. Not to mention the lack of sound a bike makes and turning radius. No bicycle lanes, super hot and humid, in no way safer... Yeah, what's not to like?

Also, the question should be regarding Phnom Penh, as cycling is still quite popular all over the countryside. Check out the yard or a countryside school and 80%+ show up to school by bike. It's just horrible in the city with the traffic, fumes and so on.
