Why do expats end up destitute in Cambodia ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Isn't it the same in the developed countries that you also get away with something, if you have money?
Not always (though huge amounts of money can make a lot go away), in the UK we've even sent a member of the royal family to court for drink driving.
Was it the Queen Mum or Prince Philip ?

You don't have to have money to be shit-faced wherever you are - just own it. After a while, other people think that the shit-faced you is the real deal. :good:
It was actually Princess Anne... who is, perhaps, the hardest working and most decent of the royals... sadly, she also has a face like a horse.

I drove that way a few times this month, but i didn't see him. You should captured a picture of him and post them here so people might know him and give him a help.
I was thinking of it , but it was a busy crossing roads and I'm afraid of snatcher.

Very true Grinch
but for a Royal with generations of in-breeding she had her good days.

Hi, I know a lot won't agree with me, but apart from rent, and if a bicycle is your transport around the city, life back home is around about the same. Electricity and food can be a lot cheaper in the UK, if your eating imports or doing the shopping with a big nose in Cambodia. In the UK, lots of specials at the supermarkets and Indian shops are a boon for veg and canned tomatoes, chick peas etc.
I actually worked it out last time I was back. I worked on a minimum UK wage compared to $800 per month here. If your spending about $220 or so on accommodation, and tend to hang out outside a lot here ( drinking coca can be more expensive than drinking beer). Overall, I would be eating better in the UK (Mediterranean style cooking etc) but would be freezing my balls off most of the year and therefore wouldn't want to hang out outside anyway. Also, there is no smoking in the pubs and beer is probably 20 poond a pint by now. So, I'd have to make sure there was a decent job to go to when I got back. Climates not so good at the moment.

Meals in supermarkets aren't expensive in the UK. A bag with a meal for 2, Chinese or Indian, will set you back £4-6.

All the rest of it is way more expensive, starting with restaurants and any leisure activity. Ever tried a club in the UK? So staying at home in your council house watching TV while munching crisps and sodas is cheap. For the rest Cambodia is more pleasant and affordable.

When was the last time you went to a club?

Maybe 10 years ago, in London. Entrance and drinks weren't cheap, I don't suppose it's come down. Cheaper places on the southern coast targeting students routinely charge £5-10 per head plus drinks at inflated prices.

Back in my day a club would sell warm cans of red stripe for 2 quid and a small bottle of water flr 2 quid. And mistsibushis, love hearts and pink ferraris were as much as the scallies lurking in the bogs said they were.

walking around shit faced day or night, falling down drunk
sleeping on the street, falling asleep drunk at the bar
pissing on the sidewalk
speeding/running red lights

if you take wages out the equation and focus on cost of living,
Cambodia is far cheaper on all accounts,
the only thing that is cheaper is the British Supermarkets,
Alcohol in British supermarkets is ridiculously cheap, ASDA has a deal on atm of 40 (440cl) cans of Beer/Cider for £20, that works out 75c for a 440cl can, not bad :P
