Why can't America make free tuition fee school?

How US students get a university degree for free in Germany

While the cost of college education in the US has reached record highs, Germany has abandoned tuition fees altogether for German and international students alike. An increasing number of Americans are taking advantage and saving tens of thousands of dollars to get their degrees.

In a kitchen in rural South Carolina one night, Hunter Bliss told his mother he wanted to apply to university in Germany. Amy Hall chuckled, dismissed it, and told him he could go if he got in.
"When he got accepted I burst into tears," says Amy, a single mother. "I was happy but also scared to let him go that far away from home."
Across the US parents are preparing for their children to leave the nest this summer, but not many send them 4,800 miles (7,700km) away - or to a continent that no family member has ever set foot in.
Yet the appeal of a good education, and one that doesn't cost anything, was hard for Hunter and Amy to ignore.
"For him to stay here in the US was going to be very costly," says Amy. "We would have had to get federal loans and student loans because he has a very fit mind and great goals."

America can't allow free education because they see it as losing in the long run. It's simple America is being rubbed by Big corporations that use the country for their own benefit.

$$$ for wars or military hardware will always take precedence over the needs of the people in the US. The only thing that can change this cycle is for the populace to wake up, pay attention to politics, and vote for
lotsa candidates like Bernie Sanders.

Most expats in Phnom Penh i know are German and i was impressed every time we talked how Germany is run. It is really great for the fact that they can go to school and hospital for free and there are more. What a wonderful country they are living in.

The problem with education free of charge is that it will lead to overconsumption. If the time of the teacher is free of charge, what would stop us from using him as a babysitter? That would be cheaper than hiring an outside babysitter. If a bag of rice were for free, people could also burn the rice as a fuel. It would be cheaper than other fuels. If all products and services were for free, that situation would just result in a shortage of everything. People would end up queuing for anything. You will end up seeing people with a university degree working as waitresses in restaurants in Germany. If they had had to pay for their degree, they would have done some vocational training instead. Cheaper, and also better jobs afterwards. Furthermore, these degrees are not really for free. The German government still has to extort substantial amounts in taxes out of the German population in order to pay for all the waste.

Dont know about other countries; in NZ the government subsidize around 60% of tertiary education, you also entitled to student allowance which around $250NZD per week if yours or your parents' incomes are less than something like 50k per year. I receive two 'friendly reminder' emails yearly from the Inland Revenue regarding my student loan which I haven't made any attempt to repay for the last 5-6 years. The loan itself isn't much, but the accrued interest has been killing me. I have not read much into this, to the Kiwis: is it true that the government can revoke your citizenship if you failed to repay your student loan for certain number of years?

Yeah, well this is the situation...

As at 31 August, 2014, more than 110,000 student loan borrowers were living overseas, with a total loan balance of $3.1 billion.

Well, during the peak of the Iraq war the US military spent $1 billion per day. So I think that number is marginal.
