Who Is Currently Overstaying Their Cambodian Visa?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. We had a poll on this last year on K440 and according to the poll, 0% of Westerners are overstaying their visas.

the thing that will stop people bribing reception is that the guest houses will get shut down if they're caught. say if the guy has a motorbike accident and they ask him where he's staying, but end up not having a record of him there. end of a guesthouse. they're actually building a police force specifically for this task... that's the degree of seriousness they're approaching it with. as for the apartment rooms, they're still going to be required to turn into the paper copies... and the same thing applies, having their businesses shut down.

Without following the link, I'd be confident the data is biased in at least a couple of ways; respondents that actively use an internet device, and, respondents that opt to participate in web polls. These two biases alone would likely preclude the data the poll claimed to be seeking.

yeah they already set up a police force specifically to make people wear motorbike helmets and stop at red lights, hows that working out?

it sounds like this will make it more difficult to overstay, more hurdles to overcome, i admit that. but you think that they can stop it?

i think they can do a pretty solid job of getting the majority. even overstayers who have a place will eventually end up going to another province/etc and checking into a guesthouse now and then.

They DO actually have a comprehensive database of Visa Numbers (and expiration dates) and the passport numbers they're attached to. Currently that's sort of useless for tracking down an overstayer, because it relies on guesthouses to turn in what is called the "White Form" and make sure it's filled out properly, then someone else to either search all of these documents or enter it into a computer. Neither of which happen. It also doesn't show check-out date, so a person moving a lot will be pretty hard to find with a lot of wild goose chases.

HOWEVER... like the work permits, this is soon to change. The information will be entered digitally at the guest houses at check in, and anyone overstaying will flag immediately with the immigration ministry. An overstayer checking into a guesthouse will be able to expect police to arrive within the hour. Upside, anyone overstaying on accident will be immediately notified and a small fine handed out. Downside, anyone not having the visa renewal money at that time will be screwed.
That part is interesting. Would the department of immigration have the capacity and infrastructure to flag passports that have overstayed their visas by comparing arrival forms and visas number with departure forms?

They just use the visa number so far as I know... and yes, it flags. So the old myth of saying you lost your passport and getting a new one doesn't work if you're from a country that re-issues the same number. I've been told that some do and some don't.

Even if you get a new passport number when they pull up zero visa found for you you'll be denied your exit stamp until you provide your old visa number.
The only way one could get out of it would be to sneak halfway out at a land crossing... somehow getting into a line for (example) thai immigration without actually stopping off at cambodian immigration. Then, if you have a new number, you might get back in on a new visa... depending on how those fingerprint systems are used. All in all, the whole system is much more advanced than I had given Cambodia credit for.
