Who are some notable Vietnamese living in Cambodia
Hi all! I'm a Vietnamese American doing some research about the overseas Vietnamese community in Cambodia. Can someone give me a clue about who are some notable people with Vietnamese heritage living in Cambodia? I'll take actors, chefs, politicians, YouTubers, community leaders-- anyone you've heard of. Thank you!

Hi SheirP,
Welcome to CEO forum.
I don't know about notable Vietnamese people, but there is a thread here which concerns Vietnamese living in Cambodia that may be of interest to you. Things are not easy for them right now.

Pretty sure most famous people who are of Vietnamese descent are going to be pretending they are not. It's a way of denigrating someone to call them a Youn here.

Mm - because that's not a loaded question at all. The authorities are already doing a reasonable job rounding up Vietnamese who paid for and thought they had legitimate papers, only to find they don't.SheirP. wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:36 am Hi all! Your question might be legitimate, but this is possibly the worst moment in Cambodian history to be asking people to name Vietnamese in Cambodia. You may not even be aware of the current politics on this, but you need to be.

Re: Who are some notable Vietnamese living in Cambodia
I have close Vietnamese friends who are considered rich. They have been here for decades and believed they had legitimate documents. It turns out at least some of their documents were either not legitimate or have fallen out of the records over time, and are now forced to leave the country as their visas expire - resulting in unemployment for their employees, and loss of support for their extended family. Note that they have been granted continuous visas in all the time they've been here and are legitimate business people. There is no reason given publicly for the sudden increase in deportations of Vietnamese, although I've heard it suggested that Chinese influences may have requested the removals to clear out businesses and industries that Chinese investors wish to move into. <- This is hearsay, don't quote me.kocdim wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 3:45 pmWhats the reason for this policy towards the Vietnamese? Re: Who are some notable Vietnamese living in Cambodia
It goes back to the 18th century and Vietnamese expansion into Kampuchea Krom. The Vietnamese invasion and occupation in the early 19th century is remembered as a particularly bad time for Cambodia. There were massacres of Vietnamese in border villages during the first Indochina War, more massacres in 1970 and mass deportations. The 1978 invasion by Vietnam and ten year occupation may have ousted Pol Pot but was eventually resented by many. There is an almost universal hatred of Vietnamese by Cambodians, and they are blamed for almost anything you can think of.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

To the degree that the colloquial Khmer words for "Vietnamese" and "thief" are identical, or nearly identical. I can understand the historical context you outline above JB, but the Vietnamese Cambodians I've met are mostly great people, subjected to some understandable but at times brutal racism.John Bingham wrote: ↑Wed Jun 13, 2018 3:58 pmIt goes back to the 18th century and Vietnamese expansion into Kampuchea Krom.
