I'm sold, for real! Sounds great! !Lonestar wrote:Go to Addis..............it is a poor man's Brazil. It is what Cambodia was in the 90's..............super fun, and you could pretend you were in a very risky place. It is awesome............and it is not packaged up for you like it is in S.E. Asia. There are no tourists, it is safe to walk the streets day or night..........and it is a puzzle you have to unlock.
The people are insanely friendly. The women are incredible. The coffee is the best on Earth. And it is fun, fun, fun.
Not sure if I'll make it this month, but it's only a 2-hour flight from Jeddah, so I'll definitely make it over!

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

Well, different sexual tastes. But yes - they do look a bit like milk chocolate.PSD-Kiwi wrote:No they aren't, they're more of a milk chocolate colour, and gorgeous.

It was well worth the effort. Kinda mad place. If you've ever been to Standley Chasm just out of Alice Springs and walked in you have an idea of the approach into Petra. You walk through this narrow entrance and suddenly you are looking at this red rock city. I went in 94 and unfortunately don't have any photos now, all pre digital and I've no longer got the prints.StroppyChops wrote:How was Petra, JP? One I've always wanted to see...
Anyway, you walk and then suddenly you get a glimpse of this:
It was a bit of a 'jaw drop' moment for me, much like my first glimpse of the pyramids in Giza.
I spent hours walking and climbing on what was a really hot day and spent the next day bed-ridden with really bad heat exhaustion and then headed to Jerash. Amman was interesting and I was really surprised how friendly the locals were. I had people come up and pay my taxi fare on two occasions, no strings attached - never experienced that before or since.
I did hope to go back to Jordan again some years back and check out some more stuff but it didn't come about. Maybe one day.

Can't comprehend the scale and presence of that place from the photos, I'm sure it's absolutely jaw dropping.Joker Poker wrote:It was well worth the effort. Kinda mad place. Haven't been to Uluru (passed through Alice, but sadly didn't get further than the airport) but there are similar ravines and gorges in WA quite near my old stomping ground - you step through and you're in another world.
Thanks for the response.

Cheers SC.
Yeah, like so many places and people, photos just don't do justice or tell the story.
If you ever happen to be in the Middle East I think you'd be glad you made the effort to go there, but you wouldn't be heading there as your primary destination from Oz, that's for sure. When I went I was living in the greater London area so the Middle East was quite affordable from there.
