At the risk of being.labeled a "lit nazi" Homer wrote in dactylic hexameter with the odd spondee or other foot added to keep the passage from becoming sing-songy.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Re: When I die I...
i have a Quote written by Homer in the epic tale of the Iliad tattooed on my arm, its a whole sleeve which i based on the book and the gods in it, Zeus, Athena, Ares, Apollo & Aphrodite, vladimir wrote:Lit nazis are acceptable.taabarang wrote:At the risk of being.labeled a "lit nazi" Homer wrote in dactylic hexameter with the odd spondee or other foot added to keep the passage from becoming sing-songy.
i actually read the book (robert fagels) to pick out my own quote from it, i then spent ages finding a copy of the original text in ancient greek and scouted line for line for the section of writing i wanted, i then went to some professional ancient greet translators with the section of ancient greek writing i had picked out and ask if it said what i wanted it to say and they said it did and was impressed with my work lol
anyway the quote i translated (which is also kind of relevant to this thread i guess) is a part in the story if i remember rightly when Achilles is retired from the war and Patroclus gets his throat cut in battle by Hector, He goes back to see his mother and claims he wants to go back to war to avenge his cousins death, but his mother tells him of his fate, he could stay here meet a girl and have a family, his children and his childrens children will remember him, but soon his name would be forgotten, or he could go back to war and be a hero and be remembered forever, but his glory goes hand in hand with his death.... and the quote is his reply...
"I will met my fate gladly,
Whenever Zeus and the other immortal gods wish to bring it,
For i will rest in peace when im dead,
But for now, Let me win great glory!"
there was also another line in there but i chose to take it out where he mentions even Hercules died

Re: When I die I...
I majored in Classical Civilisations (and English Lit) at university.
(I hope that adequately explains my insanity.)
Guy I studied with could recite long passages of Homer in Greek...which was kind of cool, but since I studied Latin (Caesar), not Greek, was kind of boring.
I hated 'Troy' with Brad Pitt, because it reduced the greatest story ever told about a lengthy war to a weekend western. Bloody Hollywood idiots.
Learned more about English grammar from Latin than any English class I ever attended.

Still, loved the scene with with Priam, played by Peter O'Toole, begging Achilles for Hector's body. One of O'Toole best scenes ever.vladimir wrote:I hated 'Troy' with Brad Pitt, because it reduced the greatest story ever told about a lengthy war to a weekend western. Bloody Hollywood idiots.
